Western Electric 32100 microprocessor family

Western Electric 32100 (WE32100) was the second generation of WE32000 32-bit microprocessors. The 32100 had 32-bit address and data buses and could address up to 4 GB physical and virtual memory. The 32100 was object-code compatible with the 32000 CPU and included the following improvements:

  • The CPU was manufactured using more modern technology and was running at higher frequencies - up to 18 MHz.
  • The 32100 featured 256-byte level 1 instruction cache.
  • The processor included co-processor interface to 32106 Math Accelerator Unit (MAU). As part of this interface the CPU had 10 floating-point instructions that were used by the CPU to determine the type and number of co-processor operands.

In addition to 32106 MAU, a WE32100 chipset included 5 other chips: 32101 Memory Management Unit, 32102 Clock, 32103 DRAM controller, 32104 DMA controller and 32105 System Interface Unit.

WE32100 CPU was used in AT&T 3B2 lines of computers and in 3B5 minicomputers. AT&T also offered WE 321SB single-board computer with this CPU.
