AMD FX-4100 is a desktop microprocessor, featuring new (at the launch time) Bulldozer microarchitecture, 4 CPU cores, very high operating frequency and unlocked clock multiplier. First details on this and other FX-Series CPUs surfaced in as early as May 2011, and they were confirmed in September by basic specs, found in a CPU support list on Gigabyte's website. Also in September, some online stores started taking pre-orders for this part. The FX-4100 was launched on October 12 along with 8-core FX-8120 and FX-8150, and six-core FX-6100. Introduction price of this CPU was $115, which was comparable to a price of Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition.

Q: Is there a way to unlock disabled cores on the AMD FX-4100 CPU?
A: No. This processor indeed has 4 disabled cores, but there is no known method to unlock them.

Q: My processor is running 55C under load. Is this normal?
A: Safe CPU temperatures are 60 degrees Celsius and below. It may still run fine with CPU temperatures, exceeding 60C threshold by a few degrees. Running the FX-4100 close to 70 degrees and higher is not recommended.

Q: Is it possible to upgrade my AMD FX-4100 microprocessor?
A: Probably yes. CPU compatibility is determined by your motherboard. Please see website for CPU support list for your board.

Aug 24, 2012: AMD today updated A-Series, FX-Series and Phenom II pricing pages, lowering prices on full range of "Llano" APUs, and high performance K10 and "Bulldozer" CPUs. The pages shows effective date August 27, which suggests that the price drops will happen next Monday. Overall, the prices were cut by 1% - 23%.

AMD introduces first "Bulldozer" FX processors
Oct 12, 2011: Today AMD launched Bulldozer micro-architecture, and first four FX desktop microprocessors. Bulldozer microarchitecture takes radically different approach than previous generation of K10 chips, and, instead of separate cores, integrates from 2 to 4 modules. Each module contains two CPU cores, that share some circuitry, such as instruction level 1 cache, Floating-Point Unit and level 2 cache.

Oct 09, 2011: AMD FX-Series of microprocessors, based on not yet released Bulldozer core, will be launched in a few days. One of upcoming models, AMD FX-4100, emerged in several US online stores at the end of September. Tray version of this CPU was listed for $180 - $190, and at the time we estimated that its official price could be close to AMD FX-6100 model. Since then, the price was lowered, and the CPU is now listed for $120.68 on, and for $130.20 on Bottom Line Telecommunications website.

Sep 28, 2011: Several consumer processors, based on upcoming Bulldozer microarchitecture, are coming in the 4th quarter 2011. The microprocessors from FX-Series will be aimed at computer enthusiast market, and will feature 4, 6 or 8 cores, and unlocked clock multiplier. Rumored official prices for three of these models, FX-6100, FX-8120 and FX-8150, were published last week, and they range from $175 to $245.

Gigabyte reveals AMD FX-Series specifications
Sep 02, 2011: As you may already know, later this quarter AMD is going to launch Bulldozer micro-architecture, that at first will be used in server Opteron 6200 CPUs, and desktop FX-Series microprocessors. Specifications of desktop FX-Series were known for more than a month, and they recently were confirmed by Gigabyte. As was discovered by VR-Zone, the latest CPU support list update for several Gigabyte socket AM3+ motherboards includes the details on all AMD FX-Series SKUs.

Front view. The box has new design: it's white with red AMD logo, which is why it doesn't look good when picture is taken on white background. The box is wider and deeper than A-Series boxes, but the height is the same. Larger box size is primarily due to larger fan/heatsink, which is of better quality than A-series heasinks. The fan/heatsink for FX-4000 series has copper core, although the core doesn't cover full surface of the CPU, and the heatsink doesn't have heat pipes.
