Intel Mobile Celeron B840 FF8062700998301

Specifications

Intel Mobile Celeron B840 is a dual-core microprocessor for entry-level notebooks. The processors was launched in September 2011 along with several new Core i7 models. Like previously released B800-series CPUs, the B840 is based on Sandy Bridge microarchitecture, that combines two CPU cores, graphics processing unit (GPU), memory controller, Direct Media Interface, and PCI Express interface on a single die. The microprocessor operates at 1.9 GHz, and uses three-level cache architecture, where each CPU core has dedicated 64 KB first level and 256 KB second level caches, and both cores share 2 MB third level cache. The L3 cache is also shared with the graphics processing unit. The GPU is clocked at 650 MHz, or up to 1 GHz in Turbo mode, and is powerful enough to display High-Definition content. On-chip memory controller has two channels, and supports DDR3 memory with data rates up to 1333 MHz. The CPU cores support Intel 64, and SIMD streaming extensions to instruction set up to SSE3, but not more modern AES and AVX instructions. Intel B840 incorporates only basic Sandy Bridge technologies, such as Virtualization, and lacks Hyper-Threading and other advanced features. Lastly, several key GPU features, such as Quick Sync, Clear Video HD, InTru 3D and 3D acceleration, are missing from the integrated graphics unit.

While many B840 CPU and GPU features were crippled to make it more affordable, all of its low-power features are the same as on more expensive Core-branded microprocessors. The Celeron has several low-power states, used to save battery power when one or two cores are idle. To conserver power in operational mode, the Intel B840 utilizes Enhanced SpeedStep technology. This feature lowers processor frequency and core voltage, thus reducing power consumption. This model has 35 Watt Thermal Design Power.

The Celeron B840 is manufactured in micro-PGA package, compatible with socket G2. The CPU in this package can be easily removed from the socket, and in most cases it can be upgraded to faster processors from Pentium or Core families. Mobile Pentiums have 50% larger size of L3 cache, and may be clocked slightly higher than this Celeron. Core i3s have even higher clock frequencies, and they further improve performance with the help of Hyper-Threading technology and AVX instructions. Core i5s and i7s add Turbo Boost and Vpro technologies on top of all Core i3 features.
