The fastest processor from E7x00 series, Core 2 Duo E7600, runs at 3.06 GHz and has 3 MB L2 cache memory. Unlike older E7x00 models, that didn't have Virtualization technology at introduction, the E7600 was released with this feature enabled. In most cases, model E7600 performs as fast as model E8300. In small applications, the Core 2 Duo E7600 has the same or a bit better performance than E8400 CPU. If you're do not run memory-hungry programs then the E7600 is certainly better upgrade / new CPU option than the E8400 due to 20% cheaper price. If you don't mind slightly worse performance, than Pentium E6500 may be even better upgrade option. The E6500 is 35% cheaper than the E7600, while only 5% - 10% slower.
