News
Oct 03, 2011: Earlier this year Intel launched three upgradeable microprocessors
with Sandy Bridge core. Mobile Core i3-2312M, desktop Core i3-2102 and Pentium
G622 CPUs had exactly the same features as Core i3-2310M, i3-2100 and
Pentium G620 respectively. However, their performance could be
boosted for a price via electronic "Upgrade" procedure. The procedure, that
doesn't require any physical contact with the chip, enables
higher processor frequencies, and, in some cases, larger L3 cache
size.
Aug 13, 2011: In June, we published a story about Intel "upgreadable"
microprocessors. These CPUs have certain features locked, and for a
nominal fee they can be re-enabled via software. Locked features could be
higher frequency, larger cache size, or advanced technologies, such as
Hyper-Threading. Three Sandy Bridge processors are known to support
this functionality - desktop Pentium G622 and Core i3-2102 SKUs,
upgreadable to G693 and i3-2153 respectively, and mobile Core
i3-2312M, which can be unlocked to i3-2393M.
Jun 24, 2011: Last summer, Intel ran a pilot program with the first upgradeable
x86 CPU, Pentium G6951. The processor was shipped in a small number of
systems, such as Gateway SX2841, and it allowed clients to upgrade
CPU without physically replacing the Pentium chip. The idea behind
this was that the G6951 came with certain disabled features, that
could be re-enabled in firmware.
Feb 15, 2011: A few days left before the launch of Core i3 microprocessors,
including entry-level i3-2100. A version of the 2100 CPU with
beefed up graphics controller, and i3-2105 processor number, will be
released in the second quarter. Today, Intel published material
declaration datasheet, that revealed another variation of the i3-2100
chip.
