Core i5-430UM is the first ultra-low voltage (ULV) microprocessor from i5-4xx line of mid-class mobile CPUs. The i5-430UM was introduced at the end of May 2010 together with 5 other budget, mid-class, and high-performance ULV parts. Main advantage of this model over other i5-4xx mobile microprocessors is a very low power consumption, which was attained by lowering default CPU core voltage and frequency. This Core i5 model is clocked at 1.2 GHz, although, when a Turbo Boost feature is activated, its frequency can be pushed to 1.73 GHz in single-threaded applications. The processor integrates two CPU cores and a large shared L3 cache on a single die. This die is manufactured using 32nm process. Another die, built on 45nm process, contains memory and graphics controllers. The memory controller supports DDR3-800 memory, and can work in single- and dual-channel memory configurations. The graphics controller operates at 166 MHz, and can boost its frequency to 500 MHz for short period of time.

The Core i7-430M CPU incorporates many features, that became standard on majority of modern CPUs: SSE4 and older SIMD extensions, 64-bit instruction set, and Virtualization and Enhanced SpeedStep technologies. More advanced features on this microprocessor are HyperThreading technology and Turbo Boost. The processor is manufactured in a micro-BGA package.

Thanks to enabled Turbo Boost feature, Core i5-430UM may significantly outperform i3-330UM in single threaded applications, despite the fact that the base core frequency and all other features of both CPUs are alike. When compared to Core i5-540UM, the Turbo Boost feature is still the major factor in performance difference between processors, as the 430UM's maximum frequency in Turbo Boost mode is 1.73 GHz, and the 540UM in this mode may be clocked as high as 2 GHz. The Core i5-430UM also lacks Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) instructions and Vpro features, that are included on the i5-540UM CPU.
