Intel Core i5-655K (CM80616003174AO / BX80616I5655K)

Specifications

Core i5-655K is the first desktop Core i5 microprocessor with unlocked clock multiplier. Built on enhanced Nehalem micro-architecture, this dual-core processor operates at 3.2 GHz, includes 4MB level 3 cache and supports AES instructions and streaming SIMD extensions up the SSE4. Two important performance enhancement features in this model are HyperThreading, which improves processor's performance in multi-threaded applications, and Turbo Boost technology, that temporary boosts performance by raising frequency of active cores.

Basic features of the Core i5-655K CPU are very similar to Core i5-650, but there are a few differences. The 655K model has unlocked clock multiplier, while the 650 model doesn't. Also, the i5-655K doesn't feature Virtualization for Directed I/O (VT-d) and Trusted Execution Technology. Like all current Core i5 microprocessors, the i5-655K is packaged in 1156-land LGA package compatible with socket 1156 motherboards. Boxed version of the i5-655K microprocessor uses updated design with large "UNLOCKED" text on the front of the box. Distinct from 6x0 boxed CPUs, the 655K box doesn't include a fan/heatsink. At launch the processor was priced at $216, or $40 more than the i5-650. According to first reviews, the microprocessor may be overclocked up to 4 GHz on air, and up to 4.5 GHz when water cooling is used.

The box has the same size as Pentium 6500K unlocked microprocessor, but different (newer) design. Width and height of the box are the same as for other boxed locked Core i5 CPUs, and the depth is about 1/2 of the depth of locked boxed processors. The smaller size of the box is possible because it doesn't come with the fan/heatsink.

News

Aug 07, 2011: A few days ago, Intel published Product Change Notifications (PCN) documents, where it disclosed plans to discontinue several socket 1156 processors in 2012. Core i5-760, as well as two unlocked "K" models, Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K, will be available for order until February 24, 2012. Last week, Intel also announced discontinuation of a large number of embedded microprocessors.

Jun 01, 2010: On May 27th we posted a news story about new Intel processors coming this quarter - Xeon X3480, Pentium Dual-Core E6700, Core I3-550, and unlocked Core i5 I5-655K and Intel Core I7-875K CPUs. All these models, as well as Core i7-880, were listed in today's Intel price list.

May 29, 2010: Non-Disclosure Agreement for i5-655K and i7-875K processors was lifted yesterday, May 28, and many sites posted reviews of these two CPUs. Most of the reviewed microprocessors were engineering samples, or, to be more exact, qualification samples.

May 27, 2010: We discovered information about new Intel desktop and server microprocessors, planned for this quarter, in a leaked Intel document. The document lists 6 new desktop processors and one server CPU.

May 19, 2010: On May 7th we posted news about pre-order of Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K microprocessors. It seems that the processors are now in stock.

May 07, 2010: Core i7-875K and Core i5-655K are 32nm microprocessors with unlocked core multiplier that are expected next month. Both CPUs are based on enhanced Nehalem micro-architecture, and feature Turbo Boost and HyperThreading technologies.
