Intel Core i7-640M Mobile processor (CP80617004152AE)
Specifications
Core i7-640M is a dual-core microprocessor from a Core i7 Mobile
family of high-performance CPUs. First references to this model
appeared in May 2010 in a leaked Intel roadmap. Preliminary price
for the CPU was published at the end of June, and the first notebooks
with the CPU were spotted in July. The CPU was released in September
2010 as part of a big launch of standard-, low- and ultra-low mobile
Arrandale models, including Core i7-680UM, Core i5-460M / i5-560M /
i5-560UM / i5-580M, Core i3-380M, Pentium P6100 / P6200, and Celeron
P4600.
Core i7-640M is based on Arrandale core, which in turn is built 32nm
Westmere micro-architecture. The Arrandale core combines two dies in
one package: one die with two HyperThreading-enabled cores and a
shared 4 MB level 3 cache, and another die with DDR3 memory controller
and 500 MHz graphics controller. Each core in the i7-640M is clocked at
2.8 GHz, and has 256 KB L2 cache. The microprocessor supports all
basic and advanced Arrandale features, like 64-bit instructions, SSE4,
AES instructions, Trusted Execution Technology and Turbo Boost. The
last feature improves CPU performance by increasing frequency of
active cores. Maximum Turbo Boost frequency on this model is 3.46 GHz.
The processor is produced in socket 988-compatible micro-PGA package.
There is also a version of i7-640M model for micro-BGA package.
Before the launch, the Core i7-640M was sighted in specifications of
Fujitsu LIFEBOOK S710, S760, NH570, E780 notebooks, Fujitsu LIFEBOOK
T900 tablet PC, and HP ProBook 4520s and 4720s laptops.

News
Oct 11, 2011: Last week Intel published Product Change Notification, informing
its customer about upcoming discontinuation of mobile microprocessors
from Calpella platform. The change affects 9 Core i5 and
Core i7 CPUs, including Core i5-560M, i5-560UM, i5-580M, Core i7-640M,
i7-660LM, i7-680UM, i7-740QM, i7-840QM, and i7-940XM. The processors
can be ordered until April 5, 2012, and they will be shipped until
October 2012.
Sep 26, 2010: Eight Core i7, Core i5 and Celeron branded microprocessors were
added today by Intel to the price list. The new processors are aimed
at budget and high-performance mobile markets, and include standard-,
low- and ultra-low power models. The cheapest new CPUs, Celerons T3500
and P4600, are priced below $100, while more powerful models with
HyperThreading, Turbo Boost and Vpro features cost as much as $346.
Aug 31, 2010: In the past one and half months, we covered most of mobile Intel
microprocessors scheduled to launch in the third quarter of this
year. The only processors, that we haven't described in detail, are
high-performance standard-power Core i7-640M, and low- and
ultra-low power Core i7-660LM, i7-680UM and i5-560UM CPUs. Today, we
present all information on the Core i7-640M CPU known to us.
Jul 23, 2010: As you may already know from publications on our and other
hardware news sites, in the third and forth quarters of this year
Intel will launch the next wave of mobile Arrandale-based CPUs: Core
i7-640M, Core i5 models i5-560M and i5-580M, Celeron P4600, as well as
Penryn-based Celeron T3500. Yesterday we reported on two other
models that maybe launched at about the same time: Core i3-380M and
Core i5-460M.
