Intel discontinues second-generation Core i5 and i7 CPUs
Sep 26, 2012: Yesterday Intel published several Product Change Notification (PCN)
documents, advising their customers about upcoming discontinuation of
Core i5 and i7 processors, and one Celeron SKU. Most of retired
microprocessors are based on older Sandy Bridge microarchitecture, and
they were introduced in the January - October 2011 time frame.
Intel Offers Performance Tuning Protection Plan
Jan 26, 2012: Typically, when you buy electronic parts and equipment they are only guaranteed to work according to published specs. If you overclock a part of your computer (usually the CPU, memory and/or graphics card) and it burns out you are not covered by the standard warranty. Most companies offer a limited warranty, which doesn't cover damage done by overclocking (classed as misuse), although some companies offer more flexible replacement terms as long as a non-working part cannot be seen to have been modified. Intel are now offering an added level of warranty protection, at a price, for those who wish to overclock their recent, high-end unlocked desktop SKUs.
Intel launches Core i7-2700K, drops prices on three CPUs
Oct 23, 2011: In August we reported about upcoming price drops of Intel
microprocessors in September and October 2011. In accordance
with the story, Intel reduced prices of energy-efficient Core i5 and
i7 CPUs in September. The second round of price cuts happened today.
The latest Intel pricelist shows 13% - 15% lower prices for Pentium
G630, G850, and Core i3-2120 models. The pricelist also includes new
Core i7-2700K microprocessor.
Core i7-2700K in Q4 2011, more expensive than i7-2600K
Sep 25, 2011: Two weeks ago, an update of MDDS database on Intel website revealed
upcoming Core i7-2700K microprocessor. At the time, we knew only box
part numbers, and S-spec and processor numbers of the new chip.
Last week, processor frequency was confirmed by updated CPU support list
on Biostar website. Earlier this week, more details on this processor
were published by VR-Zone and Fudzilla news sites.
Bits and pieces: AMD FX-8150 at 8.43GHz, Core i7-2700K frequency confirmed
Sep 15, 2011: Earlier this week, in a press release, titled "AMD Showcases
World’s Fastest CPU", AMD announced
new overclocking world record. Not yet released FX-8150 processor
with 6 disabled cores was overclocked to staggering 8.429 GHz by a
team of overclocking specialists working together with AMD engineers.
It's definitely an impressive result, and a great marketing stunt.
Intel Core i7-2700K CPU is in the works
Sep 09, 2011: Second-generation Core i7 microprocessors were introduced in
January of this year, and up to this time there were no other Core i7
models launched. The line-up of Core i7 products with Sandy Bridge
core currently consists of three CPUs: mainstream Core i7-2600,
unlocked Core i7-2600K for computer enthusiasts, and mid-power
i7-2600S. Intel today added box part numbers BX80623I72700K and
BXC80623I72700K to Material Declaration Data Sheets (MDDS) database.
These box numbers relate to Core i7-2700K processor number.
