AMD launches Danube and Nile platform
May 12, 2010: It's been a busy week for AMD. Yesterday AMD added 6 new desktop Athlon II processors, and today they launched mainstream and ultrathin notebook platforms. Two microprocessor families shipped with these mobile platforms were rebranded - "Turion II Ultra" family was changed to "Phenom II", and "V Series" family replaced "Sempron Mobile". According to a footnote in AMD's press release, this year PC manufacturers are going to launch 109 laptops based on mainstream "Danube" platform, and 26 notebooks/netbooks based on ultrathin "Nile" platform.

New notebooks on upcoming AMD Danube platform
May 05, 2010: As was widely reported in December of last year, this month AMD will launch Danube platform with 12 new Phenom II and Athlon II mobile microprocessors. The new lineup consists of three quad-core, 2 triple-core, 6 dual-core and one single-core processor.

AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N620

2010-12-18 09:16:03
Posted by: Paul Doyle

This is the CPU I want to get, to replace the 2.1 GHz P320 Athlon II in my Compaq CQ62-225NR notebook. The P320 is a fine CPU, and with 4GB of PC3-10600 DDR3, it really flies. But the N620 is a rocket.

It's just that I could always use a little more "oomph" when multitasking, and the N620 is about 38% faster/more powerful than the P320 (double the L2 cache, and 700 MHz faster, for starters), which translates into a real world, system-wide performance increase of about 15 to 20%. Not insignificant. Plus, I can get one for $86 bucks on eBay. W00t.

AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N620 - Upgrade Success!

2011-05-12 13:56:59
Posted by: Paul Doyle

Successfully upgraded my HP/Compaq CQ62-225NR notebook CPU - original CPU: P320 Athlon II 2.1 dual core CPU - (25W TDP) to N620 Phenom II 2.8 Dual core CPU (35W). Both configurations with 8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 RAM (running at only PC3-8500 1066 MHz speed with P320 CPU. Now runs at 1333 MHz with the N620).

Before/after benchmark scores:

=====================================

Windows 7 64-bit WEI scores with the P320 CPU:

=====================================

CPU: 5.1

Memory: 7.1 (8GB)

Windows Aero: 4.1

3D Business/Gaming Graphics: 5.2

Disk: 5.9

=====================================

Win7 Scores with N620 CPU upgrade:

=====================================

CPU: 6.3

Memory: 7.1 (8GB)

Windows Aero: 4.2

3D Business/Gaming Graphics: 5.3

Disk: 5.9

=====================================

GeekBench:
=====================================

GeekBench 64 bit score, Win7, P320: 2919

GeekBench 64 bit score, Win7, N620: 3847

GeekBench 32 bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04, P320: 3124

GeekBench 32 bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04, N620: 4004

GeekBench 64 bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04, P320: 3053

GeekBench 64 bit, Ubuntu Linux 10.04, N620: 3898

=====================================

Everything is about 36% faster, huge performance increase. Runs great.

Benefits of upgrade: N620 runs at 2.8 GHz, P320 only 2.1 GHz. N620's FPU is 128 bit (SSE128), P320's FPU is only 64 bit. My notebook's 8 GB of PC3-10600 RAM now runs at full 1333 MHz speed with the N620 CPU, instead of at the P320's 1066MHz. Also, the N620's HyperTransport link runs at 1800 MHz (3,600 GT/sec); the P320 runs at only 1600 MHz (3,200 GT/sec).
