Jul 30, 2012: AMD introduced A-Series family of Accelerated Processing Units
(APU) in June of last year. Those chips employed up to 4 tweaked
Stars / K10 CPU cores, and required new socket: socket FM1.
New feature of the APUs was integrated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU),
that could be also used to run highly parallel applications. Not all
microprocessors for socket FM1 came with the integrated GPU, though.
AMD produced several SKUs with disabled GPU, all of which used old
Athlon II and Sempron branding.
Bits and pieces: new 65W APUs spotted in HP PCs
Jan 10, 2012: On December 20 AMD announced five new socket FM1 desktop
Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), including two unlocked A6-3670K
and A8-3870K models with 100 Watt Thermal Design Power, and A4-3420,
A6-3620 and A8-3820 SKUs with 65 Watt TDP. Unlocked CPUs were
released about a week later, while three 65 Watt chips are still not
available anywhere, even for pre-order. The processors did emerge in
specifications of several Hewlett Packard PCs, which confirms our
suspicion that the 3420, 3620 and 3820 APUs may be shipped only as
OEM parts.
Athlon II and Sempron-branded Llano CPUs surface on Bisotar website
Aug 05, 2011: Earlier this year AMD introduced Llano processors, manufactured on
32nm process, and based on enhanced "Stars" (K10) microarchitecture.
First two AMD Llano microprocessors were launched more than a month
ago, while several other APU models will be available later this
quarter, and in the 4th quarter. Depending on incorporated features,
all current and upcoming Llano models are branded as "A-Series" or
"E2-Series".
