An old-timer, but great in its era

This was the processor that powered my family's first computer, an old Compaq Presario. At the time, the only thing faster was an AMD K6-2 450. I can remember my father berating the deathly slow Internet performance and wondering perhaps if the extra 50 MHz would have been worth the money. Of course we were on dial up at that point, so everything was slow. Nevertheless, this was cutting edge for late 1998.

The only quantitative measurement I can make for this processor is my memory of having defragmented two equally-fragmented hard drives across this platform and another (on the K6-2 and on a newer Athlon machine). The 1 GHz Athlon took about half an hour to power through about seven gigabytes of heavily-fragmented data. The K6-2 took about six hours, which is entirely disproportionate to the clock speed difference. Clearly, though the other components obviously contributed, the Athlon architecture was greatly superior.

I remember these K6's were really hard to overclock. A 50MHz overclock at 2.4V was almost always reachable, but anything higher required about 2.8V or even more. I remember reaching about 525MHz and frying the processor at 3.0V and my MVP3 board with it (a shame 'cause it OCed my P120 at 200MHZ!)

I still have the board and CPU. It wasn't bad for the time (it ran Windows 98 SE) and it still runs...very, very slowly. It struggles mightily with most modern Linux distros, I'd like to try a stripped-down distro built from the base up or something like Puppy Linux.

The price sure beat Intel at the time, and the performance was almost as good though.
