Along with
Athlon 64 FX FX-60, Opteron 185 is the fastest dual-core microprocessor for socket 939 motherboards. While the FX-60 has an advantage of having an unlocked core multiplier, that is the Athlon 64 FX processor can be overclocked and run faster than the Opteron, the Opteron 185 is still a good upgrade choice when maximum system stability is required. One minor obstacle when considering Dual-Core Opteron for an upgrade is the fact that Opteron is a server processor, and not many motherboard manufacturers tested their motherboards for compatibility with server CPUs. Nevertheless, the Opteron 185 is not much different from Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon 64 FX CPUs, and, if your motherboard supports Athlon 64 X2 4800+ or Athlon 64 FX-60, and doesn't list any Dual-core Opterons (i.e. they haven't been tested), then there is a good chance the motherboard will support Opteron 185. Performance of this Dual-Core Opteron is the same as performance of the FX-60 microprocessor running at default frequency. The Opteron 185 performs 4% - 8% faster than Athlon 64 X2 4800+.
