Intel Coppermine Slot 1 microprocessor

The main feature of Pentium III Coppermine core was integrated level 2 cache, so called "Advanced Transfer Cache". This cache was twice smaller than external L2 cache on Katmai processors, but it was twice as fast as external Katmai cache. It also had a few additional performance enhancements such as 256-bit data path to cache, lower latency and "Advance System Buffering" feature. All these improvements to the cache allowed the CPU to perform as fast or even faster than older Katmai processors. Because the new cache replaced external cache chips, big Slot 1 package was no longer necessary and it was replaced with smaller FC-PGA type package. Nevertheless, to support huge base of Slot 1 motherboards Intel continued to release Coppermine Pentium III processors in Slot 1 package. These processors had the same performance and other characteristics as socket 370 processors.

Coppermine Slot 1 processors were produced in speeds ranging from 500 Mhz to 1000 MHz. Intel announced and shipped limited quantities of 1133 MHz processor, but shortly after that the processor was recalled.

Fans

They actually run pretty cool and can get by without direct fan airflow. A rear case fan behind the CPU may be needed though so there is some airflow. I have a 600E pulled from a Dell that has no fan on it and runs around 45C typically.

Do these procs not need fans (passive cooling) due to the nm shrink? I recieved one with just a big aluminum heatsink on it, looks like this.

Response: I believe they still needed cooling by external fan either blowing air over the heatsink or pulling air from the heatsink.
