I have this processor and coupled with DDR 400 memory it had excellent performance. I was using the Intel heat sink and Fan. The combination is not sufficient. My processor was running at 112 degrees and before I could change the fan the CPU gave out. I will be purchasing another SL79L (3.0E GHz) and use an improved 3rd party heat sink and fan and hopefully I can get the temperature down to manageable levels.

mixed with a properly set up dual channel ram motherboard with large case, better fans and 500watt power supply gives great preformance. when fitted with wrong fan/heatsink or case may appear to run slower than expected due to the chips ability to throttle back 50% when cpu temp gets to 69C a great saftey feature but one that causes problems for the user when the heatsink fills with dust or the case cannot supply enough cool air it will run slower but it still runs and will not burnout even without a heatsink fitted it will just run very slowly

Correction - The processor was running ar 152 degrees, not 112, When it blew out. Yes, the pocessor is older but a lot less expensive and runs great for home use.

Had this in my Dell inspiron 9100 laptop, it ran WAY to hot so i replaced it for a pentium 4 northwood, I lik the fact that it has HT which shows the virtual core aswell in the performance manager. HOT! Very hot, uses up lots of watts. Pretty damn powerful though =p Good for playing latest games (World in conflict, Hellgate: London, Crysis and Timeshift!)

Yes i would recommend it for DESKTOP use.

Well, I don't think "will not burnout even without a heatsink fitted" is correct. According to the specs above, the minimum dissipation is 53.68W, so it would fry quite quickly even with a heatsink, if the fan stopped working. AFAIK 152 deg F is about 67 deg C, which is about the temperature my friend's Prescott reached even with a working fan, however his PC has now stopped working, I suspect the CPU is fried.

I don't know what you guy's are talking about I 've got a 3.0EGhz.After I drilled a couple of 3" holes, attached some wire grills in the back and side, applied some Arctic cooling MX-2 Thermal grease It turned into a cool running machine. Idles at 39C 36C if have my window open.

Case @ 31c CPU @ 40c as I type this.....
Yes runs hotter under say game load 46c to 49c
however Ive also doubled up on fans 3 in front of case 2 larger at the rear 2 side case fans as well...ordered a case bolwer that hasn`t arrived yet? will put it next to the agp card with hopes it will bring the case temp down even more as agp card has no fan just heat sink...
CPU using original fan and heat sink with thermal paste mobo is asus p4p800 deluxe ...and I love, stable...MASKER CASE lotsa room .....
But I digress It does run hot if you dont take some extra cooling actions....! before I faned the case it ran hot. Case was I think was 40c and the chip ran 49 to 56c and I new to address the cooling imediatly.....and did so...
Havnt tried to overclock it ...

Will post more when fan blower arrives see is that lowers Case temp any....hope upon hope..

I run this Prescott 3.0 in a Uniwill laptop N77114S and it hauls the load. It Has full desktop Ram (DDR-400)x 2GB, and a 250 GB HHD. It never runs hot, and it will flat get it. I can run any game, Burn DVD's, and photo edit with photoshop without any heat issues. It is a tad bit slower than my Quad Core though...LOL

Too Hot? Maybe Uniwill had answer for that

This little guy's brother (the LGA775 P4 530) may have more pins, but is still slower than this little PGA478 P4! I was using the P4 630 for the longest time, and even though it has double the L2 cache, they still perform the same. Great processor, putting out solid performance even with today's software.

With scyte ninja plus, my proc work at 3.9 Ghz ( vcore 1.42v, 260 MHz fsb ) on p4p800-e deluxe with a nox case with 3 fans. Temp 40-45 degree in idle and 58-60 degree with 15 min of running orthos. I say is very good proc yet but required a good cooling system. Sorry for my english.

I got this cpu free for my 478 Asrock dual channel board but all I had around was DDR333. It likes running everything at 166 (instead of 200 cpu and 166 mem). Doesn't idle as warm or throttle down when loaded, so it's almost a sweeter spot to underclock them at 2.5 GHz (15x166). Perhaps they were designed to run this bus speed and only spec'd as 15x200 due to pressure from marketing to beat the K7 Barton?? HT performance with XP-SP3 is just fine for office users (gamers should have moved on years ago).

The trick for this cpu to run optimal is to have the right RAM settings (and ofc the right RAM modules) in the BIOS.
Runs very neat for me for years now, even with only 2gb GEIL Ram modules.
Also the heat produced is really minimal, the temp. of mine never exceeds 35 degrees celsius, even on hot summerdays :)

Response: Intel's site is incortrect. The 73.5 degrees value is for 3.2E GHz/3.4E GHz processors (those have 103 Watt TDP). More info you will find in "Intel Pentium 4 Processor on 90 nm Process Datasheet", that you can find on the Intel website.
