First four microprocessors from 6xx line of Pentium 4 CPUs, models 630, 640, 650 and 660, were introduced in February, 2005. 6xx microprocessors included a few improvements over the 5xx series. Level 2 cache on 6xx CPUs was 2 MB, or twice as large as on the 5xx models. The CPUs also featured SpeedStep technology, that so far was incorporated only in mobile Intel microprocessors. The SpeedStep was used to reduce processor's power consumption by running the CPU at lower frequency and core voltage at times when maximum CPU performance was not needed. The 6xx processors also included 64-bit extensions to instruction set, called EM64T. These extensions were present only in some CPUs from 5xx series.
Pentium 4 662 and 672 microprocessors were released 6 months after the 670 CPU. The 662 / 672 were the most feature-rich desktop Pentium 4 processors. They included SIMD extensions up to SSE3, 64-bit instruction extensions, HyperThreading, Execute disable bit and SpeedStep technologies. They also incorporated new Virtualization technology, which was codenamed "Vanderpool" during development phase. This technology provides hardware support for software virtualization, i.e. running a program or an operating system in a virtual environment. In all other aspects the 662 and 672 processors were identical to the 660 and 670 CPUs respectively.
Pentium 4 670 was released three month after the first batch of 6xx-series CPUs. The processor was clocked at 3.8 GHz, and, up to this day (May 2010), it is still one of the highest clocked Intel x86 microprocessors along with Pentium 4 570, 571, 672 and Xeon 3.8 GHz. Between Intel Pentium 4 processors, models 670 and 672 were the fastest ones. While the L2 cache on the 670 was twice as large as on the 57x CPUs, the cache had higher latency (latency is how fast the cache can supply data, the smaller number the better). Larger cache with slower access time on the 670 could cause a few applications to run slower, while some tasks run up to 12% faster than on 570 / 571 CPUs. Typically the 670 was about 5% faster than the 57x CPUs. Price-wise, the 670 was not a good 570/571 alternative at launch time due to its $200 higher introductory price. At this time (May 2010), the price of the Pentium 4 670 dropped by more than 10 times, which, in our opinion, makes it a better upgrade option than the Pentium 4 570 or 571.

Wouldn't the "missing" 3.06 be a Northwood?
