News
Intel quietly launches Xeon E3-1290 CPU
Jun 01, 2011: We previously reported on Xeon E3-1290 microprocessor, which was
supposedly coming in the second quarter 2011. The expected launch date
was deduced from the fact, that chip specifications were disclosed
on Intel website in a document, titled "Processor reference chart for Q2
2011". According to the latest Intel price list, published
today, the Intel E3-1290 was launched last Sunday.
Xeon E3-1290 specifications confirmed by Intel
May 18, 2011: The first Sandy Bridge server family, Xeon E3-1200 series for
entry-level workstations and servers, was introduced on April 3, 2011.
The E3-1200 family launch event included 11 microprocessors, starting
from dual-core E3-1220L 20W model, and up to a flagship quad-core
E3-1280, operating at 3.5 GHz. There is even faster Intel E3-1290
processor in the works, and we already reported on it in April. The
specs of the new SKU were found in CPU support list for Type1U-XPUS 1U
rackmount server, produced by Japan Computing Systems. Also in April,
Intel published processor
reference chart for Q2 2011, which purposely or mistakenly
included details on Xeon E3-1290.
Intel Xeon E3-1290 CPU is in the works
Apr 08, 2011: It's been a few days since the launch of Xeon E3-1200 family for
entry-level workstations. At present, the E3 family is comprised of
dual- and quad-core Sandy Bridge-based microprocessors, with clock
frequencies maxed out at 3.5 GHz. Upcoming Xeon E3-1290 CPU will
come with higher 3.6 GHz frequency, and have the same set of features as
the current flagship E3-1280 model.
