News

Feb 14, 2011: One week ago we published a story regarding refresh of quad-core and six-core Xeon microprocessors from 5600 series, coming on February 14. As expected, today Intel updated Xeon 5600 family with 9 new microprocessors, and introduced non-embedded version of Xeon E5645. Also today, Intel launched Core i7-990X, new flagship CPU with unlocked clock multiplier for computer enthusiasts, and Xeon W3690 for single-socket workstations.

Feb 07, 2011: With the upcoming releases of Intel Xeon E3 family on February 20, and Xeon E7 CPUs in the next quarter, Intel is going to improve performance of their uni-processor and multi-processor segments of the server market. Mid-class processors for 2-socket servers, which are currently represented by Xeon 5600 family, are going to be replaced by Xeon E5 series only in the forth quarter of this year. The E5 CPUs from E5-2600 series will be coupled with C600 chipset, and they will be compatible with socket R. Before E5 microprocessors are launched, we will see at least one refresh of the Xeon 5600 series. In fact, this refresh will happen in a week, on February 14.

Oct 04, 2010: As you may be aware, Intel is planning to introduce 10 new microprocessors from Xeon 5600 series in the first quarter of next year. In two separate news stories, published in July and August, we provided specifications of several of these microprocessors - three Xeon E560x quad-core models, and 4 six-core Xeons. Recently we found additional information on three remaining quad-core Xeons with processor numbers X5647, X5672 and X5687.

Jul 17, 2010: Three weeks ago CRN reported about new Xeon 5600-series microprocessors coming in the February of next year. Yesterday Intel posted part numbers and S-Spec numbers for some of the upcoming models.
