AMD Z800x microprocessor familyAMD signed cross-license agreement with Zilog in 1978. In the result
AMD received rights to second-source 16-bit Z8000 microprocessors.
The main reason of AMD going with the Z8000 was the fact that Intel didn't
want to license x86 technology to AMD. The situation completely changed
in a few years. In 1982 Intel 8088 was selected for IBM PC computers, but only
on the condition that there will be a reliable second-source manufacturer
of the CPU. The IBM request helped AMD to negotiate new license agreement
with Intel, which allowed AMD to manufacture 8086 and 8088 CPUs.
After that AMD was no longer interested in second-sourcing of Z8000 CPU,
and it didn't extend cross-license agreement with Zilog.
