AMD FX-8350 vs Opteron 6180 SE

Mini Review

AMD FX-8350 advantages

  • The CPU has higher operating frequency than the AMD Opteron 6180 SE.
  • SSSE3, SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instructions are enabled on this microprocessor.
  • The CPU supports AES, or Advanced Encryption Standard, technology. These instructions provide hardware acceleration of AES encryption and decryption, and are beneficial if you need to protect your disk or network data.
  • The AMD FX-8350 includes AVX, F16C, FMA3 and XOP instructions. Even though these extensions are not widely used by applications yet, their support should improve in future apps.
  • The processor has FMA4 instruction set extension. The FMA4 technology is only offered on AMD processors, therefore it probably will not get broad support from software vendors.
  • The microprocessor is not "locked". Consequentally, the processor can be effortlessly overclocked on most motherboards when better performance is required.
  • Power consumption of the FX-8350 is lower.
  • The CPU is priced about 87% cheaper.

AMD Opteron 6180 SE advantages

  • More CPU cores on the AMD 6180 SE help to process multiple tasks or heavily multi-threaded programs.
  • The Opteron 6180 SE includes 3DNow! technology. Although the 3DNow! instructions may boost performance of certain old games and software, they are now obsolete, and they are not utilized by modern applications.

FX-8350 vs 6180 SE specifications comparison

The graphs below compare the most important characteristics of the Opteron 6180 SE and AMD FX-8350 CPUs. These features, as well as an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a processor performs. The "Operating frequency" graph uses dark color to represent base frequency, while lighter area is for additional frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. Although the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
