AMD Athlon X4 760K vs Intel Core i5-4590

Mini Review

AMD Athlon X4 760K advantages

AMD Athlon X4 760K
  • Operating frequency of the AMD 760K is higher than the frequency of the Intel i5-4590 microprocessor.
  • The processor has XOP instructions, that appeared in modern processors not too far ago. These extensions are not extensively used by applications yet, however their support should improve in future apps.
  • The CPU incorporates FMA4 instruction set extension. Only AMD CPUs have this technology, for that reason it probably will not get broad support from software vendors.
  • The microprocessor is unlocked. As a result, the CPU can be effortlessly overclocked on most motherboards when greater performance is needed.

  • The Core i5-4590 processor has AVX2 instructions, that were introduced in modern processors not too far ago. Although these extensions are not widely supported by programs yet, their support should improve in future applications.
  • The CPU features on-chip HD 4600 graphics. This GPU is not powerful enough to run latest games at full resolution, but it can be used for casual gaming and 3D apps.
  • The microprocessor is 16% more energy efficient.

760K vs i5-4590 specifications comparison

The graphs below compare the most important characteristics of the Intel Core i5-4590 and AMD 760K microprocessors. These features, together with an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a CPU performs. The "Operating frequency" graph uses dark color to represent base frequency, while lighter area is for extra frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. Although the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
