AMD Athlon II X3 455 vs Intel Core i3-2100

Mini Review

AMD Athlon II X3 455 advantages

AMD Athlon II X3 455

  • 3DNow! instructions are supported by this microprocessor. The 3DNow! technology helps the CPU to perform certain floating-point operations faster, and thus boost performance in games, that support the instructions. This technology is obsolete now, and only some old games and software used them.
  • The processor is priced 44% cheaper.
  • The AMD Athlon II X3 455 has 43% better price/performance ratio.

Intel Core i3-2100 advantages

Intel Core i3-2100

  • In single-threaded programs, the Intel Core i3-2100 has 38% better performance.
  • The Intel i3-2100 performs 7% faster in multi-threaded tasks.
  • Memory performance of the Intel Core i3-2100 microprocessor is better.
  • The Intel Core i3-2100 CPU supports SSSE3, SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instructions.
  • The i3-2100 features AVX instructions. Even though these extensions are not broadly used in applications yet, their support should improve in future programs.
  • Like many modern microprocessors, the CPU embeds Graphics Processing Unit. This GPU is not powerful enough to run latest games with all settings on, however it can be used for casual gaming and 3D apps.
  • Power consumption of the CPU is lower.

455 vs i3-2100 performance comparison

The charts in the table below illustrate performance of Athlon II X3 455 and Core i3-2100 processors in several different kinds of applications. The numbers for 'Single-threaded performance' and 'Multi-threaded performance' charts are calculated as an average of several related benchmarks, that you can see in the "Benchmarks" tab. As such, the displayed results may differ from results, that you may receive in individual tests. We also averaged the numbers for application type specific benchmarks and all-around performance benchmarks, and presented them in the 'Overall performance' chart. The 'Price-performance ratio' chart displays how much more performance you will get per dollar spent. This ratio does not include the cost of other system components.

Benchmarks

System setup

AMD Athlon II X3 455 and Intel Core i3-2100 processors were tested using different system components, that are identified by MB, RAM and VID columns in the tables below. The numbers in each of these columns correspond to one of motherboards (MB), memory configurations (RAM) or graphics adapters (VID), listed below:

MB - Motherboard(s):
1. ASUS P8P67
2. ASROCK M3A780GXH/128M
3. ASUS P8H61-M

RAM - Memory:
1. 2 GB DUAL-CHANNEL CORSAIR TR3X3G1600C9 DDR3
2. 2 GB DUAL-CHANNEL CORSAIR CM3X1024-1333C9 DDR3

VID - Video card(s):
1. MSI R6670 1GB GDDR5 (ATI RADEON)
2. POWERCOLOR 24PRO256M DDR2 (ATI RADEON HD2400)
3. INTEGRATED ON-CHIP INTEL SANDY BRIDGE GRAPHICS

All tests were performed at default frequency and voltage, using manufacturer's stock fan/heatsink. None of the components were overclocked. Motherboard BIOS options were left at default settings.

The results of all benchmarks are broken into four categories: multi-threaded, single-threaded, memory intensive and graphics / gaming.

Athlon II X3 455 vs Intel Core i3-2100 single-threaded benchmarks

Single-threaded benchmarks run on a single CPU core, and do not depend on such features as the number of cores, or Hyper-Threading technology. Additionally, they do not utilize on-chip caches, dedicated to other cores.

Athlon II X3 455 vs Intel Core i3-2100 graphics benchmarks

Graphics benchmarks depend on the type of integrated or discrete graphics adapter, and to less extent on the processor performance. Because these benchmarks are synthetic, they may not truly represent gaming performance. However, they still can used to estimate whether one processor will perform faster or slower in games than another CPU.

Important! The processors were tested using different types of graphics adapters, that may not be suitable for comparison.

Athlon II X3 455 vs Intel Core i3-2100 memory performance

Memory-intensive tests or programs move large amounts of data to/from memory, and they depend more on memory throughput and the size of on-chip caches, rather than on CPU integer/FP/SIMD performance.
