The 3DNow! instruction set allows the processor to execute certain floating-point operations faster, and thus boost performance in games and software, that support the instructions. These instruction are obsolete now, and only some old games and software used them.
  • In addition to 4 CPU cores, the processor embeds Radeon HD 6550D graphics unit. This GPU can be used for casual gaming and 3D apps.
  • The AMD A8-3870K CPU is 20% more energy efficient than the AMD FX-8150.
  • Based on current official prices, the A8-3870K processor is 50% cheaper.
  • The microprocessor has 71% better price/performance ratio than the AMD FX-8150.

Benchmarks

System setup

Below is a partial set of AMD A8-3870K and FX-8150 benchmarks from our CPU benchmark database. The former processor was tested on ASUS F1A75-V Pro motherboard with 4GB dual-channel Crucial BallistixPC3-14900 (DDR3-1866) memory, and MSI R6670 1GB GDDR5 (ATI Radeon). The latter processor was tested on ASUS Sabertooth 990FX motherboard, that had 4GB dual-channel Crucial BallistixPC3-14900 (DDR3-1866) memory, and MSI R6670 1GB GDDR5 (ATI Radeon) graphics. For different system configurations please see tests of A8-3870K and FX-8150 CPUs in our benchmark database.

All tests were performed at default frequency and voltage, using manufacturer's stock fan/heatsink. None of the components were overclocked. Motherboard BIOS options were left at default settings.

The results of all benchmarks are broken into four categories: multi-threaded, single-threaded, memory intensive and graphics / gaming.
