AMD Phenom II X4 960T vs Intel Core i3-2100
Mini Review
AMD Phenom II X4 960T advantages
 |
- This microprocessor is 17% faster in multi-threaded tasks. The difference in performance depends on specific application. In some of them the Phenom II X4 960T CPU could be up to 34% faster.
- The CPU has 3DNow! instructions. While the 3DNow! technology may improve performance of certain old games, it is now obsolete, and it is no longer utilized by modern applications.
- The clock multiplier on the CPU is not locked. The processor can be easily overclocked on most motherboards to achieve greater performance. Be warned that overclocking voids warranty of the microprocessor.
|
Intel Core i3-2100 advantages
 |
- In single-threaded applications, the processor has 29% better performance.
- The Core i3-2100 CPU is 2% faster when running memory-intensive tasks.
- The CPU includes SSSE3, SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instructions.
- The Intel i3-2100 features AVX instructions, that appeared in modern microprocessors not too far ago. Although these extensions are not widely used in programs yet, their support should improve in future apps.
- In addition to 2 CPU cores, the i3-2100 integrates HD 2000 Graphics Processing Unit. While this GPU is not powerful enough to run latest games with all settings on, it can be used for casual gaming and 3D applications.
- Power consumption of the microprocessor is lower.

components, that are identified by MB, RAM and VID columns
in the tables below. The numbers in each of these columns correspond
to one of motherboards (MB), memory configurations (RAM) or graphics
adapters (VID), listed below:
MB - Motherboard(s):
1. ASUS P8P67
2. ASROCK M3A780GXH/128M
3. ASUS P8H61-M
RAM - Memory:
1. 2 GB DUAL-CHANNEL CORSAIR TR3X3G1600C9 DDR3
2. 2 GB DUAL-CHANNEL CORSAIR CM3X1024-1333C9 DDR3
VID - Video card(s):

2. POWERCOLOR 24PRO256M DDR2 (ATI RADEON HD2400)
3. INTEGRATED ON-CHIP INTEL SANDY BRIDGE GRAPHICS
All tests were performed at default frequency and voltage, using manufacturer's stock fan/heatsink. None of the components were overclocked. Motherboard BIOS options were left at default settings.
The results of all benchmarks are broken into four categories: multi-threaded, single-threaded, memory intensive and graphics / gaming.
Phenom II X4 960T vs Intel Core i3-2100 single-threaded benchmarks
Single-threaded benchmarks run on a single CPU core, and do not depend
on such features as the number of cores, or Hyper-Threading
technology. Additionally, they do not utilize on-chip caches,
dedicated to other cores.

Phenom II X4 960T vs Intel Core i3-2100 graphics benchmarks
Graphics benchmarks depend on the type of integrated or discrete
graphics adapter, and to less extent on the processor performance.
Because these benchmarks are synthetic, they may not truly represent
gaming performance. However, they still can used to estimate whether
one processor will perform faster or slower in games than another CPU.
Important! The processors were tested using different types of graphics adapters, that may not be suitable for comparison.

Phenom II X4 960T vs Intel Core i3-2100 memory performance
Memory-intensive tests or programs move large amounts of data to/from
memory, and they depend more on memory throughput and the size of
on-chip caches, rather than on CPU integer/FP/SIMD performance.
