AMD FX-6100 vs Intel Core i3-2105

Mini Review

AMD FX-6100 advantages

AMD FX-6100
  • The FX-6100 processor performs 26% faster when running multi-threaded applications.
  • Memory performance of the AMD FX-6100 is better.
  • The CPU has AES technology, that provides AES encryption acceleration. The instructions are useful if you need to protect your disk or network data.
  • This processor includes XOP instructions, that were introduced in the recent past. These extensions are not extensively supported by programs yet, however their support should improve in future apps.
  • The microprocessor features FMA4 instruction set extension. Only AMD CPUs offer this technology, for that reason it probably will not get broad support from software vendors.
  • The CPU is unlocked. The processor can be effortlessly overclocked on most motherboards when greater performance is needed. Be warned that overclocking can void microprocessor warranty.

Intel Core i3-2105 advantages

Intel Core i3-2105
  • In single-threaded programs, the Intel i3-2105 processor is about 58% faster.
  • Graphics performance of the CPU is better.
  • Besides 2 CPU cores, the processor embeds HD 3000 GPU. While this GPU is not fast enough to run latest games at full resolution, it can be used for casual gaming and 3D apps.
  • Power consumption of the Intel i3-2105 is lower.

Benchmarks

System setup

Below is a partial set of AMD FX-6100 and Intel Core i3-2105 benchmarks from our CPU benchmark database. The former processor was tested on ASUS Sabertooth 990FX motherboard with 4GB dual-channel Crucial BallistixPC3-14900 (DDR3-1866) memory, and MSI R6670 1GB GDDR5 (ATI Radeon). The latter processor was tested on ASUS P8P67 motherboard, that had 2 GB dual-channel Corsair TR3X3G1600C9 DDR3 memory, and MSI R6670 1GB GDDR5 (ATI Radeon) graphics. For different system configurations please see tests of FX-6100 and Intel Core i3-2105 CPUs in our benchmark database.

All tests were performed at default frequency and voltage, using manufacturer's stock fan/heatsink. None of the components were overclocked. Motherboard BIOS options were left at default settings.

The results of all benchmarks are broken into four categories: multi-threaded, single-threaded, memory intensive and graphics / gaming.

FX-6100 vs Intel Core i3-2105 single-threaded benchmarks

Single-threaded benchmarks run on a single CPU core, and do not depend on such features as the number of cores, or Hyper-Threading technology. Additionally, they do not utilize on-chip caches, dedicated to other cores.

FX-6100 vs Intel Core i3-2105 graphics benchmarks

Graphics benchmarks depend on the type of integrated or discrete graphics adapter, and to less extent on the processor performance. Because these benchmarks are synthetic, they may not truly represent gaming performance. However, they still can be used to estimate whether one processor will perform faster or slower than another CPU in games and other 3D tasks.
