AMD FX-6120 vs Intel Core i7-3930K

Mini Review

AMD FX-6120 advantages

  • The AMD FX-6120 offers higher operating frequency than the Core i7-3930K CPU.
  • This microprocessor supports XOP instructions. These extensions are not broadly used in applications yet, however their support should improve in future programs.
  • The CPU features FMA4 instruction set extension. Only AMD microprocessors have this technology, for that reason it may not get broad support from software vendors.
  • The AMD FX-6120 is 27% more energy efficient.

Intel Core i7-3930K advantages

  • One of the distinctive features of the microprocessor is Hyper-Threading technology. The Hyper-Threading doubles the number of threads that the CPU can process simultaneously.

FX-6120 vs i7-3930K specifications comparison

The graphs below compare the most important characteristics of the Intel i7-3930K and AMD FX-6120 processors. These features, along with an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a processor performs. The "Number of cores / threads" graph displays the number of cores (darker area). Lighter area on the graph corresponds to the number of extra threads, provided by Hyper-Threading technology. The "Operating frequency" chart uses dark color to represent base frequency, while lighter area is for additional frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. Although the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
