AMD Opteron 6272 vs Intel Xeon E5503

Mini Review

AMD Opteron 6272 advantages

  • The AMD 6272 has many more CPU cores than the Xeon E5503 processor. Large number of cores helps this microprocessor to handle multiple threads or tasks at once.
  • Operating frequency of the CPU is higher than the frequency of the Intel Xeon E5503 processor.
  • The microprocessor features AES technology, that provides AES encryption acceleration. The technology is useful if you need to protect your disk or network data.
  • The processor incorporates AVX and XOP instructions. These extensions are not broadly used in applications yet, but their support should improve in future apps.
  • The microprocessor has FMA4 instruction set extension enabled. The FMA4 technology is only offered on AMD processors, thus not many software vendors may support it in the future.
  • AMD still develops microprocessors for Socket G34, used by the 6272. The company has plans to release new products for the socket in the future.

Intel Xeon E5503 advantages

  • The Intel E5503 is 30% more energy efficient than the 6272 CPU.

6272 vs E5503 specifications comparison

The graphs below compare the most important Xeon E5503 and AMD 6272 characteristics. These features, as well as an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a processor performs. The "Operating frequency" graph uses dark color to represent base frequency, whereas lighter area is for extra frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. Although the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
