AMD Opteron 6272 vs Intel Core i7-3930K

Mini Review

AMD Opteron 6272 advantages

  • Many more CPU cores on the AMD 6272 help to handle multiple simultaneous threads or applications.
  • XOP instructions are enabled on this microprocessor. These extensions are not widely used in programs yet, but their support should improve in future apps.
  • The Opteron 6272 has FMA4 instruction set extension enabled. Only AMD CPUs offer this technology, therefore not many software vendors may support it in the future.
  • Power consumption of the Opteron 6272 is lower.
  • Based on current official prices, the 6272 is 10% cheaper.

Intel Core i7-3930K advantages

  • The Core i7-3930K offers higher operating frequency than the AMD Opteron 6272 microprocessor.
  • The clock multiplier on the processor is not locked. To get better performance from the microprocessor, it can be easily overclocked.

6272 vs i7-3930K specifications comparison

The graphs below compare the most important Core i7-3930K and Opteron 6272 characteristics. These features, along with an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a processor performs. The "Number of cores / threads" graph displays the number of cores (darker area). Lighter area on the graph represents the number of additional threads, provided by Hyper-Threading technology. The "Operating frequency" chart uses dark color to represent base frequency, whereas lighter area is for extra frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. While the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
