AMD FX-8350 vs Intel Core i7-3970X

Mini Review

AMD FX-8350 advantages

  • More CPU cores on the AMD FX-8350 help to process multiple simultaneous threads or tasks.
  • Operating frequency of the FX-8350 is higher than the frequency of the Intel Core i7-3970X.
  • This processor has F16C, FMA3 and XOP instructions enabled. While these extensions are not widely used by applications yet, their support should improve in future apps.
  • The AMD FX-8350 microprocessor supports FMA4 instruction set extension. The FMA4 technology is only available on AMD processors, for that reason it may not get broad support from software vendors.
  • Power consumption of the processor is lower.
  • The AMD FX-8350 is priced 80% cheaper.

Intel Core i7-3970X advantages

  • The Core i7-3970X includes Hyper-Threading feature, which doubles the number of threads that the microprocessor can process at once.

FX-8350 vs i7-3970X specifications comparison

The graphs below demonstrate the difference between i7-3970X and FX-8350 most important characteristics. These features, along with an IPC (instructions per cycle) number, determine how well a processor performs. The "Number of cores / threads" graph shows the number of cores (darker area). Lighter area on the graph represents the number of extra threads, provided by Hyper-Threading technology. The "Operating frequency" chart uses dark color to represent base frequency, whereas lighter area is for additional frequency, provided by Turbo feature. Darker area on the "On-chip cache" graph is for the On-chip L2 cache. Lighter area is for the L3 cache cache. Although the L3 cache cache is usually larger than the On-chip L2 cache, it is always slower.
