I've made a few changes to CPU identification tool. When CPU identification is submitted, our online script now uses submitted data to guess manufacturer, family and model of the CPU. The information page now displays additional data - CPU ID data as well as data provided by person who submitted it. I also created a listing of recent public submissions - this one will be enhanced next week to allow filtering submissions by manufacturer, family and model. That was the major site change for this week, and last week I updated CPU-Upgrade website.

I created a small Windows program that you can use to identify CPU features. The idea behind the program is quite simple - you download and run it, it uses cpuid instruction to get data about your CPU, sends the data to our server, and then opens a web page with identification data from our server. Here is an example of CPU features page for Intel Q9550 microprocessor. You can find more details about the program, and the program itself on the CPU identification page. Please note that program and the CPU features page were just developed, and were not tested on all combinations of CPU / Windows OS. Consider it a beta software. We encourage everybody to try our new identification utility.

A note about the reasons why we created the program. Our primary goal was to provide an easy way to identify the CPU and to view all processor features on one page. The second goal was to collect CPU identification data. The data will be used in the future to update processor features on our CPU pages for those modern microprocessors that are not listed on AMD and Intel sites, such as mobile and OEM-only processors.

I completed the first phase of rewriting backend scripts. Certain types of site updates (AMD stepping codes, S-Spec numbers, CPU chart data) now take much less of my time. In the next two weeks I will concentrate on updating the site, and then proceed to second phase of rewriting the scripts. Besides working on the scripts, in the past three weeks I added Phenom II X3 and Phenom II X4 processors, posted Opteron and Athlon 64 price charts, and added several glossary pages.

Below is the list of the most important site updates in the past two weeks:
  • If you have any pictures of CPUs, microcontrollers or other chips, or any related pictures, you can upload them to CPU Pictures submissions page. Of course, these should pictures taken by you, and not taken from the net.
  • I posted information on recently released AMD and Intel mobile processors, low power Intel quad-core CPUs and on two dual-core desktop Intel processors.
  • Added Socket 479 page.
  • Re-arranged processors on Celeron and Pentium III family pages. Covington and Mendocino Celeron processors are no longer combined into the same sub-family, and Coppermine Slot 1 and socket 370 CPUs are no longer split into two sub-families.
  • You can now filter the list of displayed families or processors by typing partial family or CPU name. See, for example, how it is done on Core 2 family page.

I added information about recently released Athlon X2 and Phenom II X4 CPUs. I also started re-writing some of site's backend scripts - these are the scripts that I use to add new information, generate HTML pages and copy the pages to the site. Re-writing of all these scripts may take a while, possibly months, because it will be done in parallel with site updates. Some of site's functionality will be changed as a result of this rewrite. I expect that CPU and S-Spec charts will be changed, and a few new features will be added - the search for CPU name on CPU pages, and other features. New backend scripts should reduce my non-productive time, i.e. time I spend copying files, verifying that the information is correctly updated, etc, which in turn will allow me to spend more time on actual updates.
