Mar 23   Core i5 Mobile CPU pages updated

Our Core i5 Mobile family was out of date. Intel released these processors on January 7th, and I forgot to update the family at the time. I posted data on processors listed below, so all Core i5 mobile processors are now listed on the site.

I added AMD Phenom II X6 part numbers, and corrected frequencies.

Mar 20   CPU chart update

I added the last batch of more than 700 new part numbers to combined CPU chart. The CPU chart currently has data on 5805 parts. Almost all of microprocessors, microcontrollers, floating-point units, and bit-slice processors, presented on the site, is now in the chart. In the upcoming weeks I will add to the chart additional filters, such as "Part type" (CPU, FPU, MCU, etc), "Platform (instruction set)" (8080, x86, etc), and "Market segment" (desktop, mobile, or server) to the chart - these should make it easier to find all parts and families that belong to specific group, for instance, "x86 server CPU", or "68000 desktop CPU".

Mar 19   Xeon C3500 family added

Mar 17   Site updates / Opteron 6000-series news

Today I added CPU information and S-spec numbers for all missing Xeon 5600-series microprocessors:

Intel Xeon L3406 - CM80616005010AA (BX80616L3406)
Intel Xeon L5609 - AT80614005940AA
Intel Xeon L5618 - AT80614005079AB
Intel Xeon L5638 - AT80614003591AB
Intel Xeon E5645 - AT80614003597AC

We now have data on Core i7-980X and all Intel server-class processors, that were released yesterday. An interesting tidbit about the Core i7 Extreme Edition CPU. This processor is not only shipping in top-of-the-line gaming computers, like Dell Studio XPS 9000 or HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t, but is also offered in D900F Panther mobile servers made by Eurocom Corporation.

Speaking of new server-class CPUs, AMD announced channel support for upcoming Opteron 6000 microprocessors. Their press release doesn't include any specifics on the family, but confirms imminent release of 8- and 12-core Opteron microprocessors: "The following partners ... will be offering next generation 8- and 12-core systems in the coming weeks.".

Mar 16   Xeon 5600-series launched

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that my son Anthony was born three days ago, on February 18. The bad news is that this great event will severely limit amount of my spare time, which means I won't be able to do as many updates as before. My main priorities will be adding new S-specs and CPUs to the site, and making changes to backend scripts with the purpose of reducing time required for site updates. Adding older CPU families, and improving the site interface will have medium priority, and everything else will be low priority.

Benchmarks" tab on many CPU pages was changed. Before it displayed numeric test results, which was pretty much useless. I added a few graphs that show which processors have similar type of performance in in different types of applications. For example, see how it looks on Core i5 650 page (select "Benchmarks" tab to see it). The graphs are not yet available for older processors (Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron D, etc). This is just a first cut, and, I'm sure, it'll be changed in the future. I may also remove numeric test results, as they are of no use to most visitors.

Feb 14
More than 50 new part numbers were added to Power PC 603 family.

Feb 11
I've made two enhancements to a form on CPU ID submission page. Identification of model numbers was improved for AMD K8- and K10-based processors. Also, when you click on the "Part number" field on the submission form, it will now suggest part numbers that match filled-in CPU manufacturer, family name and model/processor number.

Two more updates like this, and the CPU chart will have information on all microprocessors, floating-point units, and bit-slice processors presented on the site.

Jan 28
I've made a few enhancements to server-side part of the CPU identification program. It should correctly identify most of AMD K8 and K10 families, and generate correct CPU name string for all these families. Identification of Intel families was improved too.

Jan 1
It's January 1st, beginning of a new year, and I thought it'd be good to reveal my plans for the CPU-World site. As usually, I'll continue to add newly released CPU families, microprocessors, S-Spec codes, and add missing ones. I will continue to add CPU-related information, such as sockets, microprocessor cores, manufacturers, and others. I will try to benchmark as many new processors as possible, and benchmark older processors as well (socket 478, socket 462, etc). I hope that CPU packages section will be finally added to the site. It's possible that power consumption and temperature charts will be added too. There will be a way to compare CPUs, S-spec numbers and CPUID data. CPU benchmark database will be partially rewritten to allow easier selection of benchmarks or insertion of benchmark data. There will be more parts and filtering options included on the CPU chart. I'm considering creating new pages for adding new AMD stepping codes and datecodes for S-Spec numbers. Well, my "To Do" list is quite long, but I hope that most of it will be done this year.
