I think they used tin? |
The pins on the 4040's, and lots of other early DIP chips, are steel with gold plating. (Test with your magnet.)
BTW, Tin is a soft silvery metal used in solder and to plate the inside of steel ("TIN") cans so they don't rust. Tin also does not corrode and isn't magnetic.
