Last night I was rummaging thru some boxes looking for old mainframe programming aids, and I came across a number of tubes of chips I purchased back in the last 70's and early 80's. Way back in my mind, I remembered once buying either a 4004 or a 8008. In one of the tubes, I found this chip...

It is likely that I bought that chip from Jameco, sometime between 1976 and 1978. My best recollection is that it was originally on static foam, but got transferred to a tube in the early 80's. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been powered up since I bought it, so it likely still works (assuming the case seal didn't leak).

Is this chip as rare as I think it might be ? (based on a cursory google search last night)

Goddamnit... I just bought one last night, and all of a sudden they're popping up like crazy. What's going on here?

Sorry to crash on your thread like that.

Ontopic, that is a very rare CPU. I'd imagine it to sell in the $2000 range on ebay.

EDIT: What part of florida are you in, anyway?

It's funny that after I bought and PM'ed some people about an M8008, you deside to find one and join the forums less than a few hours later...

One of you should upload a pic to cpupages.com. Not suprisingly given its rarety Thomas does not have a pic of this cpu yet. Nice clean example as well. Minty fresh. You wouldn't happen to have purchased any other cpu's in the 70's would you. If you did I think you have a nest egg on your hands.

Godbout's? Isn't that the company which produced the G8008?

Well.. I was going to ask this question over on Ars, but they couldn't decide if the CPU/Mobo forum was appropriate or not. So I decided to ask it here. Blame it on the full moon last night Smile

I did a quick peek around on eBay. I only saw one that had sold, and amazingly it sold last night.. on a Buy It Now for $100. So I guess the proper value of this is somewhere between $100 and $2000. Location: North Florida, near Gainesville.

Most of the other chips I have are Motorola stuff, and an odd smattering of Zilog with a bunch of TTL/LS thrown in for good measure. I think I saw two tubes of Hitachi 6116 static rams in there, and a tube or so of 2708 eproms. Mostly odd and ends from back when I did more electronics hacking than I do now.

The Motorola stuff is fallout from owning (and building) a SWTPC 6800 system (which I still have). Maybe a tube +/- of 6821's and 6850's. I have a few 27512 (?) that I was going to program at one time, but like lots of other things, never got around to it. Oh, and some 2102 (?) spares for the ram cards in the SWTPC.

<packrat_mode>I might even have a few more chips elsewhere, but knowing where they are, it might take me days to identify the correct box to look thru.</packrat_mode>

Sorry about that, I guess I spoke too soon.

About the $100, I'm responsible for that. I persuaded the seller to add a $100 buy it now minutes after he listed it- I initially didn't know it was intel until later. Embarassed I feel horrible, yeah, but what can you do?

They took rejected intel chips, and relabeled them for hobbyists

Ah ok. I saw a G8008 where remarking was definitely noticable. These look like regular intel chips, minus the "i". I'm betting these are military chips.

How many ebay logins do you have chipcollector? I thought you were

sycom

WoW, persuaded him to do a $100 buy it now because you didn't know what it was worth. I could use that kind of good luck. Coupled with my great ignorance about pre x86 chips I'd be rich Dancing

haha, if it wasn't for luck I wouldn't have most of my collection! Laughing I guess that's what it's all about these days. You have to be there at the right place, at the right time. Smile
