|

I have had the opportunity to examin some chips under a stereo microscope and found something very interesting. Now, i must say EPROM's are not my speciality but read on.
I have this Intel C1702A
And the microscope the dice looks like this, isn't it beautifull?!
But where is the Intel marking, copyright or whatever?
These are the markings... and the logo you see next to the copyright 1974 is from Microsystems not Intel. Does this mean that this is a fake? Or did Intel use microsystems as a second source?
What do you think? |

I think it would be interesting to have a section at ChipDB.org for interesting die art. One of the most interesting parts of chip collecting is the hunt. So searching out weird stuff on die would be a lot of fun in my opinion. Maybe we should look into a Group Buy on some cheap but decent microscopes that would be good for looking at die. I use one of the Intel Play microscopes that is USB so you can take pics but its not very powerful.
There is a newer version made by another company that is more powerful. They go for 99.00, maybe would could get them as a group for cheaper.

It is always a interesting thing to find a suitable microscope to watch this kind of EPROM or cpu chips.
Nice pictures! _________________ **********************

I've watched mines (4 1702A) under my microscope, and I found the following marking "(c) intel 1602A" why is there a discrepancy between the external marking (1702) and the die (1602) ?

It's hard to answer to this kind of question. If you don't plan to take pictures, I would definitly recommand a stereomicroscope (that's what I have). The 3D effect (not on chips, except for connexions, but for all other things you'll want to look at) is awsome, it's easier to use and to lighten the samples. The drawbacks is it's not optically optimal for photography and magnification is limited to 150x 200x (but I think it's far enough to have fun !). For picture, I would go for a macroscope which has excellent resolution for a moderate magnification.
That's for the background. As regards the link you gave, I'm afraid you will be disappointed with such item. A good optical system is expensive, and in the 500 usd range, you will get dull, blurry, not contrasted, low resolution images with optical aberrations...

really old thread..but no one at the time noticed that the die is NOT a A version die
I would guess some IC company grabbed some Microsystem MF1702R
and remarked them to C1702A where they should of been marked as C1702
not a problem running them when once programmed, but programming them would of caused a lot of problems
worse case destroy the programmer circuitry
I enlarged & inverted the image to show the old markings _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

nice spot, it is in fact a remark, one of the first intel fakes if you will _________________ ***I Aim to Misbehave.***
