Hi!
I have computer from (C)NC-lathe from -79. This computer is very interesting, it had core memory even it from late 70's. That core also keeps machine's operating system, and it can be updated from paper tape ( machining code can drive also from paper tape or core ). Though if core get corrupted, boot loader have to load from front panel switches.
Computer is done by TTL-logics chip, most complex part is 74181 ALU. I don't have very much info about this machine and Okuma's factory hadn't any help. I explore this computer and it looks like it is 12-bit ( three 74181 ), and have 16kb memory. I heard in CNC-zone.com this OSC are made whole 70's.
I have lathe's original manual and schematic not for this computer.
Maybe this is copy of something another computer, look this familiar anyone? Computer is called OSC-2 n manuals. I'll take more photos...

Big machine? No, this small...
I've heard, this computer was very fast its time. It was capable trigonometer, I mean circle tool paths and tool compensation. Also this operating system had canned cycles like "modern" machines. This mean you can descripe shape of your part, and machine do tool paths in realtime. Pretty cool, eh? ...And same time that computer controlling axis movements via +/-10V, feed back from axis was done absolute encoders... Here's same kind of machine in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgAUjRM-HXs
****
My company modernizate this kind of machines with new control systems, so I get very old computers some times...
Here's some what I have:
DEC LSI-11 based computer from Bridgeport milling machine -81, first models from -73. ( LSI-11 it's PDP-11 in one card, or something like that ).
Anilam Crusader II, based ( if I remember right ) 8085. I have this computer full schematic with comments.
But those are not so interesting, one of my client have Fanuc 2000C from 70's and in it is Intel's slice processors!!! That I have to get that...[/url] |

I have to check that ALU type tomorrow. I take some photo also.
This OSC is not very big, it's only four A4-papersize boards, rest of boards are DA converter, diagnostic and that kind of stuff. |

I don't know why, but that machine (in the video) looks very menacing... kind of scary! The nixie tubes don't help
Looks like it would mangle you without any warning!
Is it just me... ? |

Yes, it's scary when it's moves... And think that ttl based computer is controlling it... Newer machines are lot more faster and quiter.
By to way, that my machine is little bit older than in video, I have led numbers, not nixie tubes, damn! |

I check that 74 181 it was MB485, if I remember right. Manufacturer logo was "S"-letter which have line over, I didn't figure out what that cloud be...
Also I can't find computer more than two 74 181, even I remember very clearly, there was 3 +2 74181, propally I have lost one board, I have to search it...
Then I found lathe manual something intersting. It's CPU test tape description. There is test every assembler command, like BRU, NOP, INV, ADD, ARR, CYR, IORF and etc... Some commands sounds very strange, maybe there is commands to control I/O?
Every command have descrition what card have to change if test is not ok. Only mystery is, how this machine can run test tape, if some commands are unavaiable? There have to be some kind of serately
diagnostic system...
I have battery run out my camera so couldn't take any photos. I'll try tomorrow snap some shots... |

| Cool stuff! I'm amazed how good in shape the core memory and board is given the rough environment! |
