My heatgun died and I have alot of GPU and CPU to desolder over the holidays and wanted to get some suggestions on what device to buy.

Would a heatgun with variable settings be the best bet?

Thanks for any suggestions Smile

I'm pretty ready to bet CPUShack would recommend a good old M2A1-7 flame thrower Smile

Propane torch as long as you don't mind the fumes (toasts PCBs hell of a lot easier than a heat gun... ie. they have a habit of setting on fire!)

I have gone through many cheap electric heat guns, and have a Bosch one was second hand from a ex- tool hire auction and it just refuses to fail.

I also use a propane torch which works well.
Or a turboflame lighter for more precise work.

Same here, I've gone through a non-name and a Grizzly. I think it's time for some decent. I've heard good things about Milwaukee.

Watch out for too much heat from blowtorch if you are not careful. You want cpu, not Burger King.

An old electric frying pan also works well. You'll need a small pair of tongs to lift the chips from the boards.

Forget the flame torch and poison fumes.
Just get a good quality heat-gun with one setting...HOT! Wink
