I recently purchased a Metallurgical microscope for use at work, but it as also my intention to use for dies and close ups of components in a long term project.
I am still sorting out the camera & polarising filters for the setup, but within the next month will organise.
I have been saving & buying non collection quality chips for this purpose.
So if you have something unusual that you intend to scrap.. please send me a PM. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

even old ones keep their value.. the main thing that it is a Metallurgical type microscope.. not a standard compound
Metallurgical microscope have the light source coming from the same side as the lens.. while standard ones have the light coming from the other side. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Nice microscope, exactly what we need for our purposes!
But high quality metallurgical microscopes are expensive
and out of my range so had to cheap out and bought me
a standard binocular... I made the experience that
light from the side works well as long as you do not
need the highest magnifications. Here the lens
is very close to the object (= chip-dies of course:-)
and the lens faint so only a bit light will get there
where you actually need it and you will need much
Two xenon light-sources at the sides are planned, will see... _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

Out of curiosity - how much is one of those metallurgical microscopes?
BTW, it looks very professional! |

normally range from $800 - $1400 for this sort.. but if you shop around you can get for a better price.
No point going for anything above 800X.. anything above 1000X is distorted when viewing in air
if you can live with binocular rather than trinocular.. even cheaper
if you dont have a digital SLR camera already.. then a 5 or 9MP microscope camera is best choice
if you went for basic model of this (same optical specs) and got a 3MP camera.. set you back $500 - $600 _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Finally got around to buying a microscope camera.. so hopefully I can soon share some of the pictures
After discussions with John's mates at 6502.org I ended up only going for the 3MP version... as this was their comment about going higher than 2.0MP
which is a close match to the resolution of the microscope objectives
Not much sense in going to higher resolution since that would only be adding pixels to a blur.
Now on the trail of a good stereo zoom microscope to take complete single pics of dies.. rather than having to stitch pics together all the time _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Had a look around and ended up getting a 2nd hand unit on local ebay
10 - 45x (my other is 40 - 800x) and a lot of stereo zoom are only a single magnification
internal light source (a must)
and a large flat bed (most have a bed big enough only for slides) _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

all I need now is some time
Not sure if seller realises or not.. but he sent the $400 model instead of the $200 model I purchased _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:
