Hello,
it's a completely mechanical calculator. Like many other it derives from the original Felt's Comptometer, designed and patented by Dr. E. Felt in 1887. Due to the ten-keyed organization of number entering, these calculators were particularly well-suited for business applications requiring fast input of large number with many zeroes: if You have to input 1.000.000 (1 million), You'll only press one key "1" (zeroes don't require a key is pressed). Here in Italy the Comptometer-styled calculators are often known as "bank calculators". There is a wide variety of models, produced for years by many famous manufacturers including Burroughs, Monroe, FACIT and so on.
