AMD Athlon II and Phenom II CPUs planned for the third quarter

AMD already refreshed their lines of desktop Athlon II and Phenom II families two times in 2010. First time it happened in January, when AMD released standard-power Phenom II X2 and Atlhon II microprocessors, and second time it was at the end of April and in May, when AMD introduced 6-core Phenom II processors, and updated the whole line of Athlon II CPUs. In the third quarter AMD plans an incremental upgrade for many energy-efficient and standard-power Athlon II CPUs, and will introduce a few Phenom II models.

Dual-core Athlon II family will be updated with models 250e and 265, which are slightly faster versions of 245e and 260 processors respectively. It's possible that in this quarter AMD will also ship OEM-only Athlon II X2 225 CPU with smaller size of level 2 cache. Two models, 420e and 450, will be added to Athlon II X3 family, and models 615e and 645 will become the fastest low- and standard-power Athlon II X4 CPUs.

The list of forthcoming Phenom II processors is not as big as the list of expected Athlon IIs. Phenom II X4 960T and six-core 1075T CPUs are supposedly coming this quarter. We already published specifications for these processors weeks ago. Phenom II X2 family will be updated with Black Edition model 560, that will run 100 MHz faster than the previous top Phenom II X2 CPU.

Third quarter release date for many of these processors was originally made public by Fudzilla. AMD also provided specifications for some of these CPUs in a document, that can be translated as "Procurement Information":

And, finally, many of these CPUs popped up on Biostar website, which allowed us to confirm CPU specifications and part numbers. Interesting enough, Biostar website also references new Phenom II X4 840T model with OEM part number HD840TWFK4DGR. This model runs at 2.9 GHz, has 6 MB L3 cache, and 95 Watt thermal Design Power. According to the part number, the CPU will use E0 core stepping and may have Turbo Core technology. Whether this processor will be released this year or not remains to be seen.

Update (July 21): Yesterday AMD released new version of AMD Overdrive tool. This version includes the following changes:

  • Fixed the bug that AMD 840T processor cannot "disable" Turbo Core function.
  • Fixed the bug that CPU core multiplier overclocking of AMD 840T CPU doesn't work properly
Based on these changes we can tell that the Phenom II X4 840T does have Turbo Core feature enabled. Even more, the 840T model could be a Black Edition version, although this assumption doesn't match the part number, which should be HD84ZTWFK4DGR for BE version.
