Specifications of Xeon E5-2400 series CPUsThis quarter AMD will launch Opteron 4200 microprocessors for dual-processor servers and workstations. New Opteron products will be based on "Valencia" core, that packs 3 or 4 Bulldozer modules (6 or 8 cores) on a chip. At introduction, these CPUs will compete with dual-, quad- and six-core Xeon 5600 processors, built on enhanced Nehalem microarchitecture. In the first quarter 2012 Intel is going to replace 5600 family with E5-2600 Sandy Bridge chips. At this time we know 17 server and two embedded models from that family. In the Q2, Intel will release Xeon E5-2400 CPUs, which are also aimed at dual-processor systems. We recently learned that E5-2400 series will consist of 9 models with 4, 6 and 8 cores, operating at stock frequencies up to 2.4 GHz. Two entry-level models, Xeon E5-2403 and E5-2407, are quad-core CPUs with 10 MB level 3 cache. The processors fit into 80 Watt thermal envelope, and do not support Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost technologies. The E5-2403 operates at 1.8 GHz, whereas the E5-2407 has 2.2 GHz clock speed. Xeon E5-2420, E5-2430L, E5-2430 and E5-2440 incorporate 6 cores, and 15 MB, or 50% larger than on entry-level chips, L3 cache. They also support faster DDR3-1333 memory, and have Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost enabled. The CPUs are clocked at 1.9 GHz, 2 GHz, 2.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz respectively. With the exception of E5-2430L, that has 60 Watt TDP, the chips have 95 Watt Thermal Design Power. Intel Xeon E5-2450L, E5-2450 and E5-2470 feature eight cores, larger 20 MB last level cache, and support for DDR3-1600 memory. The slowest model, E5-2450L, is clocked at 1.8 GHz and it has 70 Watt TDP. Xeon E5-2450 and E5-2470 are 95 Watt parts, and they come with 2.1 and 2.3 GHz frequencies. All microprocessors from E5-2400 series integrate triple-channel DDR3 controller, and one QPI link. The CPUs utilize socket B2, also known as socket 1356. Specifications of forthcoming Xeon processors are listed in the table below:
