Intel introduces Xeon E5-2400 CPUs for embedded market

Last November we reported on three embedded Xeon E5-2400 models. The CPUs with processor numbers E5-2418L, E5-2428L and E5-2448L were supposed to be introduced this quarter. With this week's announcement of new Xeon E3 and E5 families, including E5-2400 server processors, we suspected that Intel would also launch embedded parts from the E5-2400 series. Indeed, Xeon E5-2418L, E5-2428L and E5-2448L were added the other day to Intel's ARK database, which shows their status as 'Launched'.

Xeon E5-2418L, E5-2428L, and E5-2448L have 4, 6 and 8 CPU cores respectively, and come with 10 MB, 15 MB and 20 MB L3 cache. Standard features on these parts are Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost technologies. They also support Trusted Execution technology, incorporate AES instructions, and include all SIMD extensions up to Advanced Vector Extensions.

The E5-2418L is clocked at 2 GHz, while Turbo Boost can raise its frequency to 2.1 GHz when necessary. Thermal Design Power of this chip is 50 Watt. The processor is priced at $387.

Xeon E5-2428L is a 1.8 GHz CPU. It has 10 Watt higher power consumption than the E5-2418L, which is not surprising considering two additional cores and extra 5 MB of L3 cache. Official price of this model is $628.

Intel E5-2448L operates at 1.8 GHz, and can run as high as 2.1 GHz when Turbo Boost feature is invoked. The CPU has higher 70 Watt TDP than two other embedded chips. Feature-wise the E5-2448L is very close to E5-2450L server microprocessor, except that its maximum Turbo Boost frequency is lower. Despite of this, the 2448L is priced at $1151 and is slightly more expensive than the E5-2450L.
