Intel this week launched E5-4600 v2, the last series of server processors, powered by Ivy Bridge architecture. The E5-4600 v2 CPUs have the same built-in features as Xeon E5-2600 v2 family, however they can scale up to 4 sockets. Compared to the first generation E5-4600 products, the v2 chips offer more cores, more cache, and greater memory bandwidth, which ultimately results in much higher performance. The CPUs also incorporate new float 16 instructions, APIC virtualization, Digital Random Number Generator, and support for OS Guard feature, formerly known as "Supervisor Mode Execution Protection". The CPUs are compatible with socket 2011 platform, and they are priced from $551 to about $4400.
Xeon E5-4600 v2 lineup consists of 8 server SKUs and one embedded model. On the low-end there are E5-4603 v2 and E5-4607 v2 microprocessors, with 4 and 6 CPU cores respectively. The Xeons have 2.2 GHz and 2.6 GHz operating frequencies, and fit into 95 Watt TDP. Both CPUs support all Ivy Bridge technologies with the exception of Turbo Boost. With prices like $551 and $885, the E5-4603 v2 and E5-4607 v2 are the least expensive from the series.
Xeon E5-4627 v2 is the only frequency optimized SKU in the series. This part has 8 cores, 3.3 GHz operating frequency, and 130 Watt TDP. The E5-4627 v2 does not support Hyper-threading, and it is priced at $2108.
Two lower power models are E5-4624L v2 and E5-4657L v2. The E5-4624L v2 is an embedded SKU with 10 CPU cores, 1.9 GHz clock, and 70 Watt TDP. The E5-4657L v2 is a 12-core model with 2.4 GHz frequency. This processor is rated at 115 Watt TDP, that can be considered a "low power" for 12-core CPU with 30 MB L3 cache. The E5-4657L v2 costs $4394.
The rest of the lineup have 8 or 10 CPU cores, and they run at frequencies from 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz. These Xeons have 95 Watt TDP, and their prices range from $1219 for the E5-4610 v2 to $3616 for the E5-4650 v2.
