It was MN8600 not MN6800
but I always thought it can be the MC6800 clone because I found datasheet of it but never found the chip |

Matsushita MN680xx - series are hardware-codecs for image-processing
and used in fax machines.
For MN680x I found the MN6806 which translates modified huffman code,
this technology is also used in fax machines.
Maybe the MN8600 is anything like that too or the main controller of
a fax machine? Still a big mystery...
Below a die-shot of the MN8600 made by William Blair,
haven't heard from him for a while, hope he is ok. |

Hello guys,
thank you for your help! I was already
searching for any information in the web
some time ago but couldn`t find anything.
My hope was somebody knows it coincidentally.
Seems like it is not a very popular part....
If I should open the lid to take a photo
of the die? This way would help to classify it
but also it would be good for gold-scrap
after this violence...

I thought it looked too old for MPEG-2, but as it came up on a search for MN8600 I thought it best to add the info. The main reason I added it is so that anyone finding a modern MN8600 which is in fact a codec (assuming the far-east sites that refer to it aren't mistaken) would not be mistaken by finding it here as just the older LSI chip...
Mind you, I must also admit that as the chip itself doesn't currently interest me I didn't look close enough to have noticed it could only be the older one |

Sorry debs, that doesnt look like a codec, and it looks a bit old for that technology MPEG only evolved around late 80's/ early 90's. |

Hello,
does anyone know what
function the MN8600 has?
Probably not a CPU but
maybe any controller?
BTW this unit is for trade or sale
Thanks,
