Some of you may have noticed that on another forum I have Intel mainboard top trumps for sale... Well, almost obviously this has led me onto writing this thread and starting this idea.
How about, we join forces and make a CPU - TOP - TRUMPS card set of our own. I'm not thinking of a money making idea (Not yet anyway) but something different that we can call our own.
My proposal is: we name 50 World class famous landmark CPU's and create Top trumps out of them all.
For those not familiar with how top trumps work, it's usually about 50 cards in a deck. Each card has a different picture of the products the deck is based on. Most common top trumps you can usually find are CARS, or PLANES etc.
Each different card has around 5 different measurements: for a car it would be, 1. Top speed 2. Value 3. 0-60 etc.
Are you getting the drift yet?
So if 2 people are playing both starting with 25 cards each, mthe first player would look at his or her first card, look at what category it performs best in and state that value. IE 0-60 in 3.2secs. If this is faster than the other players card, then the nomine wins the other players card.
PHEW 
So... we need, 50 CPU's all of some significance, from the dawn of CPU's to the new CPU's that are out today.
Obvious Examples are:
1. Intel 4004 grey trace
2. Intel Pentium PRO 1MB Cache
3. Cyrix 166 (for it's pure crappiness, always good to have a rubbish card)
4. AMD K6-2/3 of some kind
5. Athlon 1Ghz
6. A nexgen
7. Blue Lightning?
Etc...
With each CPU we will need 5 category's:
1. Speed - official speed
2. Age / Year month of production
3. transistor count
4. PRICE $£€
5. overall rating?
Please add / ammend any idea's... I think I'm on to something good here |

Wanted to keep the category's to 5 really. Focussing on the main CPU aspects. I think the idea of using, number of machines used in would be pretty vague in some of the answers - ie 486-dx-2-66, I have no idea... the same with many of the more common chips.
Not knocking you wepawet 
half the CPU's you've mentioned I have no knowledge of apart from the small bits I read on here. Add them to the list, and we'll have a vote at the end. Rememebr we need NEW chips aswell.. All the way up to 64 BIT.. and possible future models even? |

As you may have noticed by my site, I only have pictures and no specs listed. I am probably the least knowlegable on the specs for any particular CPU of anyone that comes to this forum but I do like the sound of the cards.

Cool idea - but I have only one problem - I have no one to play this game with. I have yet to meet another chip collector in person. I have only met them online. When I talk about collecting chips to most people I know I just get strange looks...
i am curious, is there anyone out there that has one or more friends that collect CPU's (or other chips) that you see in person at least once per year?

though you're right - it's still a strange hobby for most people - I'd also like to have some sets.
btw, I know one collector personally - a colleague of mine, but he is hust 20 percent chipmanic of me:-)
I am sure we would have a game together:-) |

 yup, same here... Most people say.. Why? and do the same to me, but I know a couple of guys that show some good interest in the collection (We know it'll be worth it when I sell my lot for millions!) LOL

When I started collecting I found the site www.cpu-museum.de and soon found out that several collectors active in the forum happen to live nearby: grampa (the site owner), morkork (the owner of www.cpu-collection.de), and redbaron all live in my town or the neighboring town, which is about 20 kilometers away. We have met several times, but not this year => the next meeting is overdue |

I sold $1,000 worth of chips to a military friend of mine but I wouldn't call him a collector. He bought them as an investment and I gave him about 10 chips to include a C4004 and a C4040. He would be the closest thing to a collector that I have met to this point other than you guys online.
I hope you get this card thing going as I like the idea!

Can somebody please arrange these into date or performance order? Or at least have a go?
As for meetings, I don't believe there are any other CPU collectors in the UK. Haven't heard yet anyway. I've bought a truck load off one guy who collected MEMORY types before.
I'm just imagining the look on my girlfriends face when I tell her we're flying over to Germany to meet other CPU collectors...My reckoning is she'd leave me! LOL
