Anyone know anything about this huge flatpack? (it is almost an inch long) It may be a multi-chip module. All I know is that it was made by Electronic Designs, which became White Electronic Designs, and is now owned by Microsemi.
Thanks,
-Gene

What makes you think it is an MCM?

Only a guess really, the size and thickness would allow for it to be an MCM and the Microsemi web page shows mainly that sort of thing. The opposite side is completely covered with a brazed on lid, and it appears there is a large cavity inside. The assembly is about 4.75 mm thick.

yah with that large of a lid, probably a hybrid, likely something like a ADC/DAC

Such flat packs are widely used in the military and space business.
I know EDI (and later White Electronics) as a manufacturer for (S)RAMs and (Flash)ROMs. They assembled small memories as multichip modules to get bigger sizes.

white Electronics has been acquired by Microsemi in 2010.

I think your chip is such a memory devicem but the pin count is quite unusual...
Is there any marking on the other side of the chip?

No, the other side is completely blank. I have three of them, I am debating whether or not to open one. I probably paid too much for them, though and that is making me reluctant. I thought they were cool looking and figured I wouldn't likely see them again.

These chips are always beauties in my opinion. And even if you work on a daily basis with space grade devices, it is never easy to get some for your collection... They are expensive and always exactly counted Sad
