This one would get my vote. At least, this is, in my opinion, the most beautiful chip in my whole Intel CPU collection. I think it's comparable with the Sun STP2018TAB-50 in gshv's Odd Chip section... well.. maybe not but not far off.

Do you guys have other candidates in mind?

I like yours better then gshv's, but I like lots of gold. These two chips are my prettiest. One is an hp para risc, the other is an IBM cache controler or some other support chip.

For me most beautiful Intel's CPU is Pentium Pro. Specialy when cover cap is desoldered at back of CPU (picture from cpupages.com):

beautiful at two sides ... great chip icon_google

They are really cool. Look out for them on ebay. There was a seller in canada with a bunch a while back.

After I paid much for my two SAMPLES I've now heared by a colleague that these DLPs were giveaways in many IT-conferences, eg. by DELL, the last year.

Can anyone confirm that?

I cant confirm that, but mine are in a nice little pouch with gold printing on the side. There is a drawstring to pull the pouch closed. To me, it looks like a giveaway, so your story may be true!
