Hey,

I just bought a 2.6 Ghx pentium 4M (SL6WH) processor to upgrade my laptop - my unit will take a 2.6Ghz processor (max) - but it is listed as a 'SL6WZ' - which is a 400Mhz FSB chip - the SL6WH is 800 Mhz FSB chip.

So question is - even though this is rated at taking a 2.6Ghz chip - if I put this sucker in - is it going to fry my board? Will the cpu just run at 400 Mhz fsb - or are these absolutley NOT compatible?

Thanks for any feedback.

Best,

A.

Have you tried it yet? It won't hurt your motherboard and it should work fine but it you will only get the 400 MHZ.

I used to be a laptop tech.

Hi,
I think you shoundn't try, the cpus have different multiplicator, the P4 SL6WH got a Bus/Core Ratio of 13 , the SL6WZ got a Bus/Core Ratio of 26 , so your cpu probably will run at 1,3 Ghz (100 * 13).
Another problem is the difference between the Thermal Guideline : your cpu got a Thermal Guideline of 69W the other has 35W. As you can see ther is too difference, the battery or the mainboard may not support this stress or the heatsink may not be able to cool the cpu.

P.S.
Sorry Lee I don't want to discredit your opinion ,but I've saw more than one laptop harmed by unsupported cpu.

No, thats cool and you are probably right. I know we used to do a lot of upgrades and I do recall people having troubles with there laptops overheating after we upgraded it. That may have been the reason?

Good info. Thanks!
