I just looked in the phone book and found a scrap dealer. The first time I
went there was a mountain of computers, printers and old telecommunication
equipment. I talked the owner into letting me look around. I told him I collected chips.
There must be a place in your area.

I found one in Canada. That is where I got the pictures on the main page of my site. I met the guy through Ebay and we did some trading and he shipped me bag after bag of those white ceramic chips you see on my website It was a chip collectors dream!!! I wish you all could have been there (at a distance of course)

I wish there was. I live near Pittsburgh, and haven't found anything yet. |
Within a few minutes drive of Pittsburgh, you have:
DRBConsulting , and Renwerxtech.com both in Moundsville, W.va just outside of Wheeling, W.va.... only about a 40 minute drive from the pittsburgh airport... i've driven it many times.
A list of Pennsylvania computer recyclers is available at:
http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/airwaste/wm/HHW/Electronics/Recyclers_list.htm
There are at least 30 - 50 companies dedicated to computer recycling in the Tri-state area alone.... most within an hour or two from pittsburgh...
if you want any more info. on this subject i can help with, please let me know.
I've been working in the computer recycling business for the past 10 years in the Akron area ( from Cleveland to Pittsburgh). And might know a few places off the beaten path and unadvertised to help you. |

Thanks!
Maybe I will take a road trip during the spring or summer.
My dream is to go to some shop and find a pile of chips like gmanbc has! I know, slim chance, but still, one can dream. |
Not really that slim of a chance....
there are number of shops, including the ones i mentioned, that process over 10,000 - 30,000 computers a month, including myself.
Most of the time, the cpu's like that are all tossed into bins for scrap metals recycling, and sold for the gold content or whatever other precious metals can be derived. There is a heavy metals recycling plant outside of Dover, Ohio that goes through dozens of gaylord containers of old cpu's every month. In your eyes, a gold mine of opportunity for a collection, but to most scrap dealers it is simply just mining for the actual gold.
the really nice ones come out of the old IBM mainframes. They have lots of platinum / gold content.... and are pretty kewl designs to look at.
i noticed one of the members here posting some very high prices for Pentim Pro processors for instance that are tossed out on a daily basis.
one mans junk is anothers treasure i guess.

Anybody here know any place like that in Germany?
I'm just starting my collection (15 "common & lame" chips, but you gotta start somewhere ) and something like that would be...heaven.
Problem is that here old electronics are considered special trash and are collected once a month. So people give them away together with old paint cans and other bad stuff and the trash collectors won't let you poke around in them. :/ |

I can tell you that I buy a lot from chip brokers in the US and they are constantly telling me that they are getting the chips from someplace in Europe. I haven't been to Germany since 1989 but if I can ever make it back there I do plan on looking around.
I thought that Korea would be a great place to find old stuff but these people are thrifty! There are as many salvage yards here as there are tattoo parlors and pawn shops outside of Fort Bragg. Everything that outwears its usefulness is melted down way before it can become collectable |

checkout this ebay auction and then look at Gmanbc's pic of his pile of scrap chips. You can see this chip more than once in the Gman's scrap pile.

It seems like there is a real need to connect collectors with the chip scrappers. I am really intrested in the old mainframe gold chips and would pay more than the gold value for a lot of these types of chips. I know I am not the only one. Hopefully market forces will one day create this connection. If I can find a scrapper in my area (St. Louis, MO) I will try to get him intrested in selling to collectors. I have bought chips from "scrap" being sold on ebay and have gotten some good chips this way , but it is always a gamble. The mass scrappers treat the chips like
scrap , and as often as not they are damaged in some way.

You may be in luck. I just moved to Korea from FT Leonardwood. I have a friend in ST Louis that works at an off lease company where they part out machines and I used to buy a lot of old 286 thru Pentium chips through him at gold scrap. I am in Korea now so I really don't have the time to mess with it. The place is called EPC (Executive Personal Computers) and my friends name is Jason Morgan. The place is huge and if you are into comuters you will love this place!!! Here is his info:
EPC
3941 Harry S. Truman Blvd.
St. Charles, MO 63301
Phone: 636-443-1999
Tell him Lee Gallagher sent you and he will take care of you. He is my friend but he also made a ton of money off me as I had spent several hundreds of thousands of dollars there. He was my main supplier to the computer store I owned outside of FT Leonardwood.
If you make it over there let me know what you think |

I used too have some money and I even owned two computer shops for awhile but one of them broke me as I opened it in the same town and because I am in the Army I couldn't track things as well as I would have liked and my business partner wasted quite a bit of money on it.
None the less I made a little money there in Missouri and when I sold my shop I spent all that money on vintage computer chips. Now, I am mobile and am doing something I really enjoy.
My computer shop is still there in Missouri but it is now called Ozark Electronics. I will be retiring in the next year or two and will be moving back down there and either buying back into the shop or starting my own with another friend of mine that is retiring as well. Don't hate me because of the money as I am broke now spending way too much money on my own collection.
Metal Maker will be able to validate my fish story after he goes to EPC.

Lacking a recycler here, I go to the main Salvation Army site and dig through their junk. I have found some nice stuff there. The first D8086 I ever got came from an old terminal lying in their outside yard. Also some Harris 286 stuff, various mathcos, EPROMs, microcontrollers, etc. I have found i960 chips in some old laser printers (can't remember which ones - I think one of the first color HP LaserJets).
