Well, I've just spent over an hour lapping the heatsink. 45 minutes with 240 grain, then more time with 400 and 600 grain to be as smooth as possible. Still got a line about 3mm wide just off-centre where the heatsink was making no contact with the CPU before. Hopefully it's shallow enough now that with the heatsink compound it will cool the CPU a lot more. I am amazed that a Thermaltake heatsink can have such a poor finish to it!

Yeah, some are atrocious. I've seen processors with serial# stickers put on the IHS between it and the heatsink

I need some much finer paper before I lap a CPU. 600 grain for this heatsink was OK because the grooves from the original sanding were at least 0.25mm deep, so the contact now is far better.

I still need to get a much better heatsink though - the BIOS is still reporting the temperature as 15 degrees (C) higher than the maximum rated temperature!

It might take me a couple of days to get an OS on the system and check for BIOS updates and other stuff that might help with the temperatures, but I do hope it doesn't work out that I bought a faulty CPU or board, the combined cost was too high for that of news... I certainly don't plan on keepiong teh system running 24/7 until I get to the bottom of the overheating or find a way to keep it much cooler

Might be a problem with the motherboard or CPU? Sometimes bad CPUs will just heat up wayyyy too much, and sometimes motherboards cause it.

Yea if you guys are doing some lapping of either the cpu or the heatsink it would be advisable to go up to 1200 grit as the final sanding. And you would be amazed at how bad the contact can be with stock cpu or heatsink. Also another little trick to make sure the surface is absolutly flat is to lay youre sandpaper on a piece of glass and use that as the surface to rub against.

hehe, I have sandpaper lined up on glass at the moment, but only up to 600 grain so currently only good enough for the heatsink I did earlier that was seriously bad.

I will be getting some much finer paper soon, and preparing lapping spaces from 400 to 2500 (maybe rougher than 400 for seriously bad heatsinks like today, but hopefully that won't happen too often).

For now I think my priority will have to be getting a much better heatsink, although I dod suspect the MoBo might be faulty. Not sure I can do much about it, as it was bought cheap from a private seller via a third party, so I am not sure I even get a warranty with it I guess that's the chance we all take when we buy cheap...
