This is a graphics controller. _________________ ..::morkork::..

This is not a graphics controller. Intel's clone of NEC 7220 was i82720. It is much more interesting chip - Bubble Memory Controller. Here's a web page about Bubble Memory Prototype Kit BPK 72 - in japanese

Yes, Elar is right. I collect bubble memory too and I have several variations of the controller boards with the Intel and TI bubble memory modules. If anyone has an extra 7220, if would be interest because mine is badly scratched.
Thanks Norm |

My mistake. See, how useful is to collect something else besides microprocessors

the intel 7220 is something i know nothing about however the NEC7220 i do.
The NEC 7220 is a monochrome graphic controller chip very advanced for its time. It has a very advanced set of bitblock transfer, line generating, arc, circle, ellipse, ellipse arc, FILLED ARC, FILLED CIRCLE, FILLED ELLIPSE, FILLED ELLIPTICAL ARC and other many many varied commands. It has the ability to interface very easily with DRAM chips such as video ram, 4464 dram and it was copied or licensed by Hitachi who made the almost exact same set of commands available as a subset of it's HD63484 ACRTC which was a color capable chip. I have a book I purchased in 1985 for the HD63484. This chip is on a board I removed from the cpu section of a gerber router and was in working order when it was removed. 28 pins used on a 50 pin edge connector which looks sorta like an apple card.
NO THIS is NOT a BUBBLE MEMORY controller. this IS a graphic controller. The card I have has an CGA/EGA video connector of nine pins a la the IBM PC and also has four TMS4464-12 120nanosecond memory chips with a 16mhz standard oscillator 'box'. This controller talks to the memory chips via two MC74HC257N chips with i believe either latch or multiplex or both the row and column addresses to the memory chips. Video Dram chips have shift out capabilities for video so THIS IS NOT A BUBBLE MEMORY CONTROLLER. The NEC 7220 is indeed a VIDEO controller extraordinaire for it's day. I wish I had bought a manual for it but they are available.
